He is known for being Kim Kardashian’s best friend but Jonathan Cheban has long been making a name for himself as an indepdenent brand. Here we watch up with the 40-year-old entrepreneur and former PR executive in Dubai.
What have you made of the UAE so far?
It’s my first time and I’m obsessed with it. It’s a little bit different and everything is so modern. I feel right at home in Dubai.
What does it say on your business card? Online entrepreneur, PR, restaurateur, reality TV star?
Ha, I haven't had one in about seven years. My logic is if you don't know me, you don't need my card. At this point, I'm turning myself into a lifestyle brand with restaurants and products, and now there's the website, www.thedishh.com.
You first came to our attention as Kim Kardashian's best male friend in the E! reality show Keeping Up with the Kardashians. What makes the two of you click?
We trust each other. If I tell her “that looks great” or “that looks bad”, she listens. I tell my regular friends the same thing, the difference is they argue and don’t listen. I say to them “look at this ‘Kim perfection’. [laughs] Are you seriously not listening?” I just see things and know what works. I love the whole family and I’m also very close to Kris and Khloe. We all have the best time and laugh constantly. I was just staying at their house last weekend.
Are E!’s cameras omnipresent at the house?
They’re not there all the time, but a lot. I’m so used to them now, it’s the same for me whether they are there or not – except I need better hair. [laughs]
To what degree do you, and the family, self-censor what you say on camera?
Zero. I may get a bit funnier as you can’t be slumped in a chair, hardly talking. But in general it’s the same.
KUWTK has struggled with ratings of late – what do you think the public want to see more or less of?
Obviously, ratings can never be as big as they were at the start of the show. And as I see it, now that it’s around the world, perhaps more people see it than ever before.
Kim’s more revealing new look since she got together with Kanye has fuelled much debate. What do you say to the detractors?
I think she’s ahead of fashion and they just don’t get it. Kim is getting everything directly from the top and the critics will be wearing what she is in a year’s time.
So this is the best style we’ve seen on Kim yet?
Yes, this is hot. She’s on point with everything.
Let’s talk Kanye. Your disagreements with Kim’s ex, Kris Humphries, were well-documented. So has she now made the right choice?
Oh yeah, it’s perfection. The two of them are two peas in a pod. I’m obsessed with him – I can’t get enough of him. He’s so smart, he’s a genius. It’s easy to be inspired by listening to him.
You were one of the first to see North after she was born. What personality is she developing?
Ah, I go nuts for her. I can’t even look at her. It hurts to look at her she’s so cute, I swear. She’s got the most beautiful perfect skin, she’s yummy.

How it started
As an extension of my Instagram – all the cool things to eat, to see, to buy. It’s evolved in recent months to a full lifestyle website with 20 staff and writers. It’s a platform that was needed. We’re talking a huge range of different products and apps, shown in a very pretty way.

(A recent update: “$900 face cream – it’s real and it will take 10 years off your face.”)

I thinking Dubai will have its own section and tab! The city is synonymous with luxury and it was aspirational for me to come here, I’m so glad I did.

What is Folia?
Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed bin Talal's new plant-based menu will launch at Four Seasons hotels in Dubai this November. A desire to cater to people looking for clean, healthy meals beyond green salad is what inspired Prince Khaled and American celebrity chef Matthew Kenney to create Folia. The word means "from the leaves" in Latin, and the exclusive menu offers fine plant-based cuisine across Four Seasons properties in Los Angeles, Bahrain and, soon, Dubai.
Kenney specialises in vegan cuisine and is the founder of Plant Food Wine and 20 other restaurants worldwide. "I’ve always appreciated Matthew’s work," says the Saudi royal. "He has a singular culinary talent and his approach to plant-based dining is prescient and unrivalled. I was a fan of his long before we established our professional relationship."
Folia first launched at The Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills in July 2018. It is available at the poolside Cabana Restaurant and for in-room dining across the property, as well as in its private event space. The food is vibrant and colourful, full of fresh dishes such as the hearts of palm ceviche with California fruit, vegetables and edible flowers; green hearb tacos filled with roasted squash and king oyster barbacoa; and a savoury coconut cream pie with macadamia crust.
In March 2019, the Folia menu reached Gulf shores, as it was introduced at the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, where it is served at the Bay View Lounge. Next, on Tuesday, November 1 – also known as World Vegan Day – it will come to the UAE, to the Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach and the Four Seasons DIFC, both properties Prince Khaled has spent "considerable time at and love".
There are also plans to take Folia to several more locations throughout the Middle East and Europe.
While health-conscious diners will be attracted to the concept, Prince Khaled is careful to stress Folia is "not meant for a specific subset of customers. It is meant for everyone who wants a culinary experience without the negative impact that eating out so often comes with."

What: The Al Burda Festival

The Al Burda Festival is a celebration of Islamic art and culture, featuring talks, performances and exhibitions. Organised by the Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development, this one-day event opens with a session on the future of Islamic art. With this in mind, it is followed by a number of workshops and “masterclass” sessions in everything from calligraphy and typography to geometry and the origins of Islamic design. Pharaoh's curse
British aristocrat Lord Carnarvon, who funded the expedition to find the Tutankhamun tomb, died in a Cairo hotel four months after the crypt was opened.
He had been in poor health for many years after a car crash, and a mosquito bite made worse by a shaving cut led to blood poisoning and pneumonia.
Reports at the time said Lord Carnarvon suffered from “pain as the inflammation affected the nasal passages and eyes”.
Decades later, scientists contended he had died of aspergillosis after inhaling spores of the fungus aspergillus in the tomb, which can lie dormant for months. The fact several others who entered were also found dead withiin a short time led to the myth of the curse.
