Zayn Malik writing tell-all autobiography
Singer Zayn Malik is reportedly planning an autobiography, that will lift the lid on his five years in boy band One Direction with bandmates Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. According to dailymail.co.uk, a source said: "This book is going to be explosive and Simon Cowell will be furious with Zayn and may even try to stop it from coming out. But Zayn is determined to reveal the secrets behind the clean image that was always so fiercely protected by the band's publicity machine." Malik is also expected to discuss his romances, including his broken engagement with Little Mix star Perrie Edwards and his current relationship with supermodel Gigi Hadid. Superman will apparently be back in black
Man of Steel star Henry Cavill has posted an image of Superman in a black costume on Instagram. He's expected to return in next year's Justice League movie, despite his apparent demise at the conclusion of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice this year. Superman was resurrected with a black suit after he was killed off in the DC comics in 1993. Cavill will not be the first Superman star to wear a black uniform. Superman Returns actor Brandon Routh and Lois & Clark TV star Dean Cain also pulled on dark versions of the traditionally blue, red and yellow suit. Justice League will unite Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash and Cyborg as they form a superpowered team to protect the world after Superman's demise. – AP
Suicide Squad still making a killing at box office
Defying critics as well as competition from two new releases, the DC Comics-inspired Suicide Squad topped the US box office for a second weekend. The action film, starring Will Smith, Jared Leto and Margot Robbie, is the story of a band of deadly supervillains recruited by a secret government organisation to carry out risky secret missions. It brought in US$43.5 million in North America screens, down sharply from its opening-weekend take of US $133.7 million, but still enough to edge out new releases Sausage Party and Pete's Dragon. – AFP
Emmy Award-winning actor Fyvush Finkel dies at 93
Actor Fyvush Finkel, the Emmy Award-winning character actor whose career in stage and screen started in Yiddish theatre and led to memorable roles in Fiddler on the Roof on Broadway and in Boston Public and Picket Fences on TV has died. He was 93 and had suffered from heart problems for months. Finkel won a supporting actor Emmy in 1994 for playing Douglas Wambaugh on Picket Fences – he was also nominated the year before – and earned a Golden Globe nomination for the role in 1995. He also earned three Screen Actor Guild Awards, one for Nixon and two for Picket Fences. – AP
Comedy Central cancels The Nightly Show
The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore is ending. The late-night humour and talk show, which was launched in January last year, will conclude its run this week, Comedy Central announced. The programme – which filled the slot vacated by Stephen Colbert when he ended The Colbert Report and moved to CBS to take over The Late Show from David Letterman – sought to explore current events and life issues. It was presented by Wilmore, who previously served as "senior black correspondent" on The Daily Show. But audience appreciation of The Nightly Show never matched its Daily Show lead-in, neither during the regime of Jon Stewart nor his successor, Trevor Noah, who took over in September last year. – AP
Indian Thriller Kaashmora set for release
Actor Karthi says he has waited two years to reveal the first look at upcoming Tamil supernatural thriller Kaashmora, which features him in a triple role. The actor tweeted: "Have been waiting for more than two years to reveal the first look of #Kaashmora on 18th August at 00:01 hours in all four (southern) states." The film also stars actresses Nayanthara and Sri Divya, and is directed by Gokul, with music by Santosh Narayanan. It is the first south Indian film to use 3D face-scan technology. -IANS
Rajinikanth back on set after detox
Superstar actor Rajinikanth, who has been out of action for nearly two months, will be back on the sets of upcoming Tamil sci-fi action drama 2.0 this month. He had taken a month-long US trip with his daughter, Aishwarya, and returned to India at the end of July. As part of his holiday, the Enthiran actor is said to have gone through a detoxification programme. It was also reported he had surgery, but this has not been confirmed. In 2.0, which is a sequel to the 2010 film Enthiran, Rajinikanth returns as scientist Vaseegaran. The movie also stars Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar, Amy Jackson, Sudhanshu Pandey and Adil Hussain. Elvis Presley’s Graceland to get a facelift
A new entertainment complex being built across the street from Graceland – Elvis Presley’s former home-turned-museum – in Memphis, Tennessee, will include a large soundstage for live performances and movie screenings, as well as an exhibit honouring influential music producer Sam Phillips. The entertainment centre will be 200,000 square feet and cost US$45 million. It is replacing an ageing visitor centre across from the home where Presley spent 20 years before his death in 1977. For about three decades, Graceland’s visitors have been flowing through ageing, grey, flat-roofed buildings to see exhibits highlighting Presley’s career, a car museum, souvenir shops and restaurants. Most of those buildings will be torn down to make way for the new complex. The cornerstone of the new complex will be a 20,000 square-foot museum featuring hundreds of Presley-related artefacts. The complex will also have a cafe, a barbecue restaurant, an ice cream shop, retail stores full of Presley-related merchandise and the Graceland Soundstage, which will seat 2,000 people. – AP
Bieber gets defensive on Instagram, threatens to go private
Justin Bieber is threatening to go private on Instagram after getting negative comments from fans of his ex-girlfriend, Selena Gomez, about pictures he posted at the weekend of himself with Sofia Richie. One included the caption: “I’m gonna make my Instagram private if you guys don’t stop the hate this is getting out of hand, if you guys are really fans you wouldn’t be so mean to people that I like.” The caption sparked more criticism from some, reportedly including Gomez herself. Mercer, the investment consulting arm of US services company Marsh & McLennan, expects its wealth division to at least double its assets under management (AUM) in the Middle East as wealth in the region continues to grow despite economic headwinds, a company official said.
Mercer Wealth, which globally has $160 billion in AUM, plans to boost its AUM in the region to $2-$3bn in the next 2-3 years from the present $1bn, said Yasir AbuShaban, a Dubai-based principal with Mercer Wealth.
“Within the next two to three years, we are looking at reaching $2 to $3 billion as a conservative estimate and we do see an opportunity to do so,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Mercer does not directly make investments, but allocates clients’ money they have discretion to, to professional asset managers. They also provide advice to clients.
“We have buying power. We can negotiate on their (client’s) behalf with asset managers to provide them lower fees than they otherwise would have to get on their own,” he added.
Mercer Wealth’s clients include sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and insurance companies among others.
From its office in Dubai, Mercer also looks after Africa, India and Turkey, where they also see opportunity for growth.
Wealth creation in Middle East and Africa (MEA) grew 8.5 per cent to $8.1 trillion last year from $7.5tn in 2015, higher than last year’s global average of 6 per cent and the second-highest growth in a region after Asia-Pacific which grew 9.9 per cent, according to consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG). In the region, where wealth grew just 1.9 per cent in 2015 compared with 2014, a pickup in oil prices has helped in wealth generation.
BCG is forecasting MEA wealth will rise to $12tn by 2021, growing at an annual average of 8 per cent.
Drivers of wealth generation in the region will be split evenly between new wealth creation and growth of performance of existing assets, according to BCG.
Another general trend in the region is clients’ looking for a comprehensive approach to investing, according to Mr AbuShaban.
“Institutional investors or some of the families are seeing a slowdown in the available capital they have to invest and in that sense they are looking at optimizing the way they manage their portfolios and making sure they are not investing haphazardly and different parts of their investment are working together,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Some clients also have a higher appetite for risk, given the low interest-rate environment that does not provide enough yield for some institutional investors. These clients are keen to invest in illiquid assets, such as private equity and infrastructure.
“What we have seen is a desire for higher returns in what has been a low-return environment specifically in various fixed income or bonds,” he said.
“In this environment, we have seen a de facto increase in the risk that clients are taking in things like illiquid investments, private equity investments, infrastructure and private debt, those kind of investments were higher illiquidity results in incrementally higher returns.”
The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, one of the largest sovereign wealth funds, said in its 2016 report that has gradually increased its exposure in direct private equity and private credit transactions, mainly in Asian markets and especially in China and India. The authority’s private equity department focused on structured equities owing to “their defensive characteristics.”

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.
