Stone Temple Pilots at Dubai’s jazz festival
The Stone Temple Pilots are coming to next year's Emirates Airline Dubai Jazz Festival. The American grunge veterans, led by the new singer and the Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington, will play on the opening night, February 13, at Festival Park in Dubai Festival City. As well as being responsible for some landmark grunge albums including 1992's Core and 1994's Purple, the band made headlines in May after acrimoniously dumping the singer Scott Weiland. Stone Temple Pilots join another varied jazz festival bill featuring the singers and songwriters Jamie Cullum, Olly Murs, Colbie Caillat and the British boy band The Wanted. Supernatural thriller shot in UAE premieres in Dubai today
Scrambled, a new supernatural thriller short film that has played at festivals internationally, will premiere today in Dubai at Grand Cineplex Wafi and will be released online by Hashmic House Films on November 28. Written and directed by Faisal Hashmi, Scrambled is a twist on the "tooth fairy" urban legend and follows a man who finds himself receiving random letters at his door late at night after injuring himself. Scrambled was shot in Dubai with no crew except for the actor, Abidur Rahman, and the director. It is set in a single location with only one actor in the film. – The National staff
Bieber walks off stage during São Paulo concert
Justin Bieber brought a concert in Brazil to an abrupt end after a water bottle was chucked at him, Sky News reported. The teenage pop idol stared hard into the crowd after the incident, then walked off stage without saying a word. Reviews claim that fans at Saturday's São Paulo concert waited for 30 minutes and sang his biggest hit, Baby, in the hope he would return. But thousands of Beliebers were left disappointed when the lights came on and the crew began to dismantle the set. The Canadian, who is currently in Brazil on a world tour, has been dogged by a series of unwelcome headlines, including lashing out at photographers, relieving himself in a restaurant mop bucket and being kicked out of hotels. – The National staff
Janis Joplin gets posthumous Hollywood star
Janis Joplin was honoured on Monday with a star on Hollywood's storied Walk of Fame more than four decades after her death from a drug overdose. The raspy-voiced singer was immortalised on the Hollywood walk at a ceremony attended by her family, while the country music luminary Kris Kristofferson played her signature hit Me and Bobby McGee. The singer died in October 1970 at the age of 27. Joplin was given the 2,510th star on the Walk of Fame, where entertainment legends are enshrined on a stretch of pavement. A biopic on Joplin, starring Amy Adams, is in the making but a release date has not been set. – AFP

Generational responses to the pandemic
Devesh Mamtani from Century Financial believes the cash-hoarding tendency of each generation is influenced by what stage of the employment cycle they are in. He offers the following insights:
Baby boomers (those born before 1964): Owing to market uncertainty and the need to survive amid competition, many in this generation are looking for options to hoard more cash and increase their overall savings/investments towards risk-free assets.
Generation X (born between 1965 and 1980): Gen X is currently in its prime working years. With their personal and family finances taking a hit, Generation X is looking at multiple options, including taking out short-term loan facilities with competitive interest rates instead of dipping into their savings account.
Millennials (born between 1981 and 1996): This market situation is giving them a valuable lesson about investing early. Many millennials who had previously not saved or invested are looking to start doing so now.
Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.
