Safia Bari is harnessing the full creative force of special-needs students in Dubai.
Through workshops that she runs at the Special Needs Future Development Center, which the Indian expatriate set up eight years ago, Bari and her students have developed a range of handmade products to rival those found at any boutique retailer.
Best-selling items include chunky statement necklaces and delicate bead bracelets, as well as printed notelets and functional key holders, all of which have been made by individuals of varying capabilities and disabilities. SNF not only seems to be filling a void in terms of empowering special-needs students in the UAE but also provides gift solutions from the small and personal to the large and corporate. Bari tells us about her personal journey and what it has taken to help her students fulfil their physical and mental potential.
How did you come to set-up the Special Needs Foundation Development Center in Dubai?
My 31-year-old daughter Nusrat was my inspiration. She has special needs and I realised that after graduation there wasn’t much else open to her. I was in contact with other parents of graduates who had the same concerns; this was 10 years ago. So, I set up the SNF Development Center to accept students post-graduation and help prepare individuals with special needs for integration into mainstream society and the UAE workforce.
Back then I used to just do small events like arts and crafts at home, or group outings, but it wasn’t enough. So, in 2007 we started with one apartment in Karama and just four students. Our motto is “grow up confident” and that’s what we wanted to give the students. Today we have almost 40 students and a waiting list of 30. We have children with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, slow learners and those with learning difficulties. We also have children with mild autism. We also now operate from 14 rooms in the same building we started in. It’s been a long journey from two teachers to 22 in seven years.
Describe an average day and, specifically, the creative activities on offer?
We operate from 8.30am to 12.30pm five days a week, while Saturday is kept especially for arts and crafts. Making the products gives the students a great sense of achievement, they often feel distressed when they see their siblings working or earning money. I give the students a stipend of around Dh200 at the end of each month to empower them, and they feel they are in some way able to contribute to their family.
What types of crafts are the children making?
Everything from festive greeting cards to hand-painted photo frames. Companies also request brightly coloured coasters, which can be printed with phrases like “A cup of Creativi-Tea is enough for a day”.
Is the aim of the crafts arm of SNF to prepare the students for the workplace?
Students do graduate from SNF and some have secured job placements. The goal is to build confidence they may have lost and make them as independent as they can be. And for some of them, even at the age of 12, this has been their first school. It’s wonderful to see them grow and improve. For example, there’s one girl who makes beautiful bracelets and she’s now pretty much an expert. She’s teaching her colleagues to do the same and to see that is very satisfying. Especially considering that she came to us as a very timid girl, she couldn’t even walk straight and would limp with her knees bent, using the wall for support. Today, she’s walking, running and taking part in sports.
The students sound greatly empowered.
Yes, they love it. You should see some of them who attend the bazaars that we regularly hold, where they are selling the products they've made. They are so excited to tell you how much money they've made and it makes me feel, even if it's just Dh500, so proud and happy for them. We feel we've done something good.

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.

WHAT ARE NFTs?
Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are tokens that represent ownership of unique items. They allow the tokenisation of things such as art, collectibles and even real estate.
An NFT can have only one official owner at one time. And since they're minted and secured on the Ethereum blockchain, no one can modify the record of ownership, not even copy-paste it into a new one.
This means NFTs are not interchangeable and cannot be exchanged with other items. In contrast, fungible items, such as fiat currencies, can be exchanged because their value defines them rather than their unique properties.
