Bollywood buzz: Split with Katrina might prove expensive for Ranbir

Earlier this month, A-list stars Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif suddenly ended their six-year relationship, giving fans and Bollywood insiders quite a turn. But it seems that the repercussions are going to be far more significant for Kapoor. Bollywoodlife.com has reported that moving out of the penthouse they share is going to cost the actor his security deposit — a whopping Dh11.3 million. Kapoor, 33, has now moved into a new home in Mumbai while 32-year-old Kaif continues to stay at their old apartment. There have also been rumours of a “break-up” party that Kapoor threw for close friends after moving out.

Anil Kapoor makes Dubai his second home

Dubai is soon going to become Bollywood superstar Anil Kapoor's second home, with his jewellery designer wife Sunita finalising the deal for a two-bedroom apartment by Danube Properties at Al Furjan. The housing project is worth an estimated Dh300 million. The 56-year-old actor, who is currently riding high on the success of his movie Dil Dhadakne Do, for which he recently won a Filmfare award, broke the news at a press conference in Dubai. The couple's decided to make the investment "since it is likely that property prices will appreciate closer to World Expo 20-20". The actor later recounted the difficulties they faced while hunting for a house in Mumbai for their 30-year-old daughter, the actress Sonam Kapoor. The power couple have been complaining about the skyrocketing prices of real estate in the western Indian city, according to a report in the Mumbai-based daily tabloid Mid-Day.

Aamir Khan wows to get back in shape after gaining 25kg for his role in Dangal

For a while now, Aamir Khan has been looking old and overweight, much to the disappointment of his fans. But it was strictly for work, since this was the look he needed to portray his role as a wrestler in the upcoming sports drama Dangal. But Khan, 50, is now required to lose almost 25kgs to shoot the remaining portions of the film. "My big challenge is to come back into shape like how my body was in Ghajini or Dhoom 3," the actor said at a recent press conference to celebrate the 10th anniversary of his superhit film Rang De Basanti, according to a Press Trust of India report. Dangal is due out in December 2016.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan special guest of French president

French President Francois Hollande is on a three-day visit to India to be the chief guest for the country's 67th Republic Day celebrations on 26th January. Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan was invited as a special guest at a lunch hosted in the President's honour by French Ambassador Francois Richier in New Delhi. According to a report in The Hindu, Hollande asked the actress to join him at his table and the two discussed her movies and experiences at the Cannes Film Festival, where she's been a regular for 14 years. The 42-year-old actress, who has had a perpetual hit-and-miss relationship with fashion critics for her wardrobe at Cannes, looked stunning in a red Benarasi mehrab sari by Indian designer duo Swati and Sunaina and traditional Polki jewellery. Rai-Bachchan has had a long-standing association with France. She is one of the global brand ambassadors of French cosmetics company L'Oreal Paris and in 2012 France recognised her contribution to the cinematic arts by awarding her the prestigious Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters (Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres), their second-highest civilian honour.

The smuggler

Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.

Khouli conviction

Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

For sale

A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.

Six pitfalls to avoid when trading company stocks

Following fashion

Investing is cyclical, buying last year's winners often means holding this year's losers.

Losing your balance

You end up with too much exposure to an individual company or sector that has taken your fancy.

Being over active

If you chop and change your portfolio too often, dealing charges will eat up your gains.

Running your losers

Investors hate admitting mistakes and hold onto bad stocks hoping they will come good.

Selling in a panic

If you sell up when the market drops, you have locked yourself out of the recovery.

Timing the market

Even the best investor in the world cannot consistently call market movements.

Why it pays to compare

A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.

Route 1: bank transfer

The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.

Total cost: Dh567.25 - around 2.9 per cent of the total amount

Total received: €4,670.30

Route 2: online platform

The UAE bank’s charge for sending Dh20,000 to a UK dirham-denominated account was Dh2.10. The exchange rate margin cost was Dh60, plus a Dh12 fee.

Total cost: Dh74.10, around 0.4 per cent of the transaction

Total received: €4,756

The UAE bank transfer was far quicker – around two to three working days, while the online platform took around four to five days, but was considerably cheaper. In the online platform transfer, the funds were also exposed to currency risk during the period it took for them to arrive.
