Police in Los Angeles have arrested the Dharma and Greg actor Thomas Gibson on suspicion of driving under the influence. Gibson, 50, was arrested on Sunday after he drove through a barricade set up to keep cars off a course for a forthcoming running event. He was booked and released on US$15,000 (Dh55,000) bail. Gibson currently stars in the series Criminal Minds. - AP
Calvin Harris tops British album charts
The Scottish musician Calvin Harris returned to the top of the British album charts this week. 18 Months, his third studio album, had hit the No 1 spot on its debut in November. Emeli Sandé slipped to No 2 with Our Version of Events, while Ed Sheeran placed third with his debut album Plus. The X Factor UK winner James Arthur held on to first place in the singles rankings with Impossible. Scream and Shout by will.i.am, featuring Britney Spears, stayed at No 2, while Psy's global hit Gangnam Style was third. - Reuters
Wong Kar-Wai returns with The Grandmaster
The Hong Kong director Wong Kar-Wai's long-awaited martial arts film The Grandmaster received its world premiere in Beijing on Sunday after more than six years in production. The film, starring Tony Leung and Zhang Ziyi, tells the story of the legendary martial artist Yip Man. In his first appearance to promote the film, Wong said he's confident The Grandmaster would be well received abroad. "There is no such thing as a western or eastern audience. The elements of cinema are the same worldwide, although their expression is different." In February, Wong will lead the jury of the Berlin International Film Festival. - AFP
Fox to play newscaster in new comedy show
In his new comedy, Michael J Fox will play a New York City newscaster who had quit his job due to Parkinson's disease but returns to work because a medical regimen has helped him control the disease's symptoms. It mirrors the life of Fox, who said drugs have helped minimise the physical tics of Parkinson's and have enabled him to take on more acting jobs. The network NBC is scheduling the comedy for September. Jennifer Salke, the network's entertainment president, said the real-life disease has left Fox an object of pity-fuelled admiration yet Fox "approaches his life and his work with a lot of irreverence". She says Fox is meeting this week with actresses who may be cast as his wife. - AP
MIA album release delayed
The release of the English singer MIA's new album, Matangi, has been pushed to December instead of April. "I finished it and then I handed the record in, like a couple of months ago. I've been told it's too positive. So we're having a bit of an issue at the label. They're like, 'You need to darken it up a bit'," she told goldcoast.com.au. "It's an interesting one for me. It's like, 'We just built you up as the public enemy number one and now you're coming out with all this positive stuff'." - IANS
