There are certain words that the English-speaking world simply cannot agree on when it comes to pronunciation. Is it baa-th or bah-th; tom-ay-to or tom-ah-to, for example? And don't even get us started on scone. The humble microwave, however, is not one of them.
That is, unless you're Nigella Lawson.
The British cook has puzzled fans the world over with her off-beat pronunciation of the kitchen appliance.
"But I still need a bit of milk, full fat, which I have warmed in the microwave," she says in a clip circulating from her new TV show Nigella's Cook, Eat, Repeat. Written down it is all very clear; heard aloud, she pronounces microwave as meek-row-wah-vay.
Is this a fancy new interpretation of the most basic of words, Nigella?
Fans have compared the household name to Moira Rose, the matriarch in Canadian sitcom Schitt's Creek, played by Catherine O'Hara.
When you Google Moira Rose, the first question that comes up is, "What is Moira Rose's accent?" The best answer that can be offered is that it's a merge of posh British and Canadian articulation.
Proof, if you will, that her left-field pronunciation of certain words is as famous as her outlandish monochrome wardrobe.
Baby may be the word O'Hara's character is best known for making her own, always pronouncing it like the French bebe, despite the fact that her character has no French-Canadian backstory.

'Worse than a prison sentence'
Marie Byrne, a counsellor who volunteers at the UAE government's mental health crisis helpline, said the ordeal the crew had been through would take time to overcome.
“It was worse than a prison sentence, where at least someone can deal with a set amount of time incarcerated," she said.
“They were living in perpetual mystery as to how their futures would pan out, and what that would be.
“Because of coronavirus, the world is very different now to the one they left, that will also have an impact.
“It will not fully register until they are on dry land. Some have not seen their young children grow up while others will have to rebuild relationships.
“It will be a challenge mentally, and to find other work to support their families as they have been out of circulation for so long. Hopefully they will get the care they need when they get home.”
