  • Arabic

The New Year might be here, but most of us are not giving up the intense and close relationship we developed with our sofa and our laptop in 2020 anytime soon.

And although the list of new shows to catch up on grows longer each day, we're here to add to that problem with a host of new shows, new seasons and old favourites to ensure you never leave the house again ...

OSN Streaming

'CB Strike: Lethal White', January 21

This is the first adaptation to be based on the Cormoran Strike detective novels by Harry Potter author JK Rowling, written under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. Cormoran Strike (Tom Burke) is a war veteran turned private detective who, along with his assistant Robin (Holliday Grainger), solves complex cases that have eluded the police.

‘Dolittle’, January 22

Robert Downey Jr dusts off his upper-class English accent once more to play the famed doctor who can speak to the animals. Having become a recluse since his wife died, Dolittle is lured out of his mansion to embark upon a journey to a famed island, along with a plucky young apprentice, in this adventure for the whole family.

That American actress Zendaya became the youngest ever recipient of the Emmy Best Actress in a Drama Series at the age of 24 speaks volumes about the quality of this hit show. A stylised though terrifyingly realistic portrayal of high school trials and tribulations, the second episode follows on from the first, which was released in December.

Amazon Prime

‘This Is Us’ (Season 5), January 7

With only four episodes released from season 5 in 2020, fans of the show have had to wait until January 2021 for the second half of the season. And they’ll be pleased to know that it picks up right where it left off, addressing Kate’s past and her pregnancy revelation to Toby.

‘After We Collided’, January 8

The sequel to 2019's After, a film based on one of Wattpad's most downloaded novels, comes to Amazon's streamer. Check back in with Tessa Young and the world's most antagonistic protagonist, Hardin Scott (portmanteau: Hessa), as they argue, break up, make up, argue, break up, repeat.

‘One Night In Miami’, January 15

The fight was real when, on the night of February 25, 1964, in Miami Beach, Florida, Cassius Clay and Sonny Liston met in the ring for the first time. What follows, though, is a fictionalised account from director Regina King and screenwriter Kemp Powers of what happened when Clay (Eli Goree), along with NFL star Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge), soul singer Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr) and activist Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir), met up at a hotel to shoot the breeze about what it meant to be a black man in 1960s America.

Disney+

‘Star Wars: Forces of Destiny’, January 8

All four volumes of the Star Wars spin-off will be available to stream from Friday, January 8. The 2D animated show, narrated by Maz Kanata, is set across several eras of the beloved galactic franchise and focuses on the stories of female characters featured in previous Star Wars instalments in a collection of two-to-three-minute shorts.

‘WandaVision’, January 15

The hugely anticipated Marvel show featuring MCU favourites Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany, as Wanda Maximoff and Vision, premieres on Friday, January 15, with episodes released weekly.

'Mary Poppins Returns', January 15

Featuring Emily Blunt as the world-famous nanny and Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda as Bert the chimney sweep, this delightful, long-awaited sequel is ideal family viewing.

Apple TV+

‘Dickinson’ (Season 2), January 8

The first season was a huge hit with viewers thanks to its steam-punkish take on the teenage years of American poet Emily Dickinson. Starring Hailee Steinfeld in the titular role, the modern soundtrack and Gen Z-friendly language makes this an engaging period drama.

‘Servant’ (Season 2), January 15

If season one of this M Night Shyamalan-directed spook-fest wasn't creepy enough, season two delves deeper into the complexities that arise for Sean (Toby Kebbell) and Dorothy (Lauren Ambrose) as they parent the "reborn doll" they sunk their emotions into after their newborn baby tragically died. Nell Tiger Free stars as the spooky nanny with the ulterior motive, while Harry Potter's Rupert Grint is Dorothy's bemused-yet-supportive brother.

‘Palmer’, January 29

Justin Timberlake makes a return to acting, starring as the eponymous Eddie Palmer, who returns to his home town in Louisiana after 12 years in prison. Moving back in with his grandma Vivian, the woman who raised him, he gets a job as a janitor, and is soon inadvertently tasked with caring for his troubled neighbour Shelly’s child, Sam, after Shelly disappears. But when she returns and wants Sam back, Palmer’s not convinced that’s in Sam's best interest.
