There's never a bad time for a little pick-me-up, particularly amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
And that is just what one of the capital’s most enduring ensembles aims to do with a virtual concert on Friday, June 26.
After Covid-19 forced the Abu Dhabi Choral Group to shelve its planned Young Frankenstein performance at the NYU Abu Dhabi Arts Centre this month, the collective will instead take their talents online to deliver a set of fresh new tunes.
Well, that is not exactly accurate. The Quarantania Mania Virtual Concert, which will be streamed on the arts centre's Facebook page from 8pm, will be full of puntastic takes of old and modern show classics that speak to our present times.
This means I Can Go the Distance from Hercules will be switched to I Can Social Distance, while the Frozen favourite Do You Wanna Build a Snowman? has been adjusted to Do You Wanna Have a Pool Day?
"The group had to come up with an alternative way to express creativity and bring joy into the homes of their friends, families and fans,” said member Cathryn Downing.
“All numbers were written by the members themselves and will take you on the emotional journey associated with being in quarantine. You will sometimes laugh, sometimes cry, and always identify with all the emotions on display.”
Formed in 1977, the Abu Dhabi Choral Group has long provided an outlet for residents wishing to express their vocal talents. With more than 50 performers comprising 15 different nationalities, the ensemble has kept an active performance schedule over the years, with shows including The Addams Family (2016), Legally Blonde The Musical (2015), Curtains (2014) and The Wedding Singer (2013).
With their latest production, Young Frankenstein, meant to mark the end of the now-scrapped performance season for the NYU Abu Dhabi Arts Centre, artistic director Bill Bragin said the virtual concert continues both the ensemble's and the organisation's mission to bring entertainment and culture to the capital.
“In the spirit of ‘the show must go on', we invited them to come up with another approach to bring the talent and creativity of our friends and neighbours to the public,” he said.
“The Abu Dhabi Choral Group has come up with a playfully charming new approach to keep us all connected.”

Evacuations to France hit by controversy
- Over 500 Gazans have been evacuated to France since November 2023
- Evacuations were paused after a student already in France posted anti-Semitic content and was subsequently expelled to Qatar
- The Foreign Ministry launched a review to determine how authorities failed to detect the posts before her entry
- Artists and researchers fall under a programme called Pause that began in 2017
- It has benefited more than 700 people from 44 countries, including Syria, Turkey, Iran, and Sudan
- Since the start of the Gaza war, it has also included 45 Gazan beneficiaries
- Unlike students, they are allowed to bring their families to France
One in nine do not have enough to eat
Created in 1961, the World Food Programme is pledged to fight hunger worldwide as well as providing emergency food assistance in a crisis.
One of the organisation’s goals is the Zero Hunger Pledge, adopted by the international community in 2015 as one of the 17 Sustainable Goals for Sustainable Development, to end world hunger by 2030.
The WFP, a branch of the United Nations, is funded by voluntary donations from governments, businesses and private donations.
Almost two thirds of its operations currently take place in conflict zones, where it is calculated that people are more than three times likely to suffer from malnutrition than in peaceful countries.
It is currently estimated that one in nine people globally do not have enough to eat.
On any one day, the WFP estimates that it has 5,000 lorries, 20 ships and 70 aircraft on the move.
Outside emergencies, the WFP provides school meals to up to 25 million children in 63 countries, while working with communities to improve nutrition. Where possible, it buys supplies from developing countries to cut down transport cost and boost local economies.
Key findings of Jenkins report
- Founder of the Muslim Brotherhood, Hassan al Banna, "accepted the political utility of violence"
- Views of key Muslim Brotherhood ideologue, Sayyid Qutb, have “consistently been understood” as permitting “the use of extreme violence in the pursuit of the perfect Islamic society” and “never been institutionally disowned” by the movement.
- Muslim Brotherhood at all levels has repeatedly defended Hamas attacks against Israel, including the use of suicide bombers and the killing of civilians.
- Laying out the report in the House of Commons, David Cameron told MPs: "The main findings of the review support the conclusion that membership of, association with, or influence by the Muslim Brotherhood should be considered as a possible indicator of extremism."

'The worst thing you can eat'
Trans fat is typically found in fried and baked goods, but you may be consuming more than you think.
Powdered coffee creamer, microwave popcorn and virtually anything processed with a crust is likely to contain it, as this guide from Mayo Clinic outlines:
Baked goods - Most cakes, cookies, pie crusts and crackers contain shortening, which is usually made from partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. Ready-made frosting is another source of trans fat.
Snacks - Potato, corn and tortilla chips often contain trans fat. And while popcorn can be a healthy snack, many types of packaged or microwave popcorn use trans fat to help cook or flavour the popcorn.
Fried food - Foods that require deep frying — french fries, doughnuts and fried chicken — can contain trans fat from the oil used in the cooking process.
Refrigerator dough - Products such as canned biscuits and cinnamon rolls often contain trans fat, as do frozen pizza crusts.
Creamer and margarine - Nondairy coffee creamer and stick margarines also may contain partially hydrogenated vegetable oils.
