Westeros is coming to Broadway: 'Game of Thrones' stage play in the works

A number of stages around the world will soon transport audiences into the mystical world of Westeros.

George R R Martin's popular Game of Thrones franchise is set to be adapted into a play, with productions planned for New York's Broadway, London's West End and Australia.

The performance will bring some of the novels' and TV series' well-known characters to the stage, though no casting decisions have yet been announced.

Author Martin is working with award-winning playwright Duncan Macmillan and director Dominic Cooke to create the theatrical production, with the first show expected to launch in 2023.

The play will take place during "a pivotal moment in the history of the series", Martin revealed on Tuesday, and will be set more than a decade before the events in his novels.

"The seeds of war are often planted in times of peace. Few in Westeros knew the carnage to come when highborn and smallfolk alike gathered at Harrenhal to watch the finest knights of the realm compete in a great tourney, during the Year of the False Spring," the statement added.

"It is a tourney oft referred during HBO's Game of Thrones and in my novels, A Song of Ice and Fire. And now at last, we can tell the whole story ... on the stage."

In Game of Thrones lore, a number of the franchise's beloved characters were at the jousting event, so theatregoers can expect to see the likes of Ned Stark, Jaime Lannister, Robert Baratheon, Rhaegar Targaryen and Prince Oberyn Martell in the production.

Martin said work on the project began before the pandemic.

"Our dream is to bring Westeros to Broadway, to the West End, to Australia ... and eventually, to a stage near you," he added.

The play follows the final instalment of the HBO TV series in 2019, after eight seasons.

A number of Game of Thrones-related projects have been in the works since then, including House of the Dragon, a prequel series slated to come to HBO in 2022. Martin is also collaborating on projects related to his other books, including Sandkings for Netflix.

It's been nearly 10 years since the saga's most recent volume, A Dance with Dragons, was published.

Why it pays to compare

A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.

Route 1: bank transfer

The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.

Total cost: Dh567.25 - around 2.9 per cent of the total amount

Total received: €4,670.30

Route 2: online platform

The UAE bank’s charge for sending Dh20,000 to a UK dirham-denominated account was Dh2.10. The exchange rate margin cost was Dh60, plus a Dh12 fee.

Total cost: Dh74.10, around 0.4 per cent of the transaction

Total received: €4,756

The UAE bank transfer was far quicker – around two to three working days, while the online platform took around four to five days, but was considerably cheaper. In the online platform transfer, the funds were also exposed to currency risk during the period it took for them to arrive.

Dubai works towards better air quality by 2021

Dubai is on a mission to record good air quality for 90 per cent of the year – up from 86 per cent annually today – by 2021.

The municipality plans to have seven mobile air-monitoring stations by 2020 to capture more accurate data in hourly and daily trends of pollution.

These will be on the Palm Jumeirah, Al Qusais, Muhaisnah, Rashidiyah, Al Wasl, Al Quoz and Dubai Investment Park.

“It will allow real-time responding for emergency cases,” said Khaldoon Al Daraji, first environment safety officer at the municipality.

“We’re in a good position except for the cases that are out of our hands, such as sandstorms.

“Sandstorms are our main concern because the UAE is just a receiver.

“The hotspots are Iran, Saudi Arabia and southern Iraq, but we’re working hard with the region to reduce the cycle of sandstorm generation.”

Mr Al Daraji said monitoring as it stood covered 47 per cent of Dubai.

There are 12 fixed stations in the emirate, but Dubai also receives information from monitors belonging to other entities.

“There are 25 stations in total,” Mr Al Daraji said.

“We added new technology and equipment used for the first time for the detection of heavy metals.

“A hundred parameters can be detected but we want to expand it to make sure that the data captured can allow a baseline study in some areas to ensure they are well positioned.”
