An Abu Dhabi Festival co-production of The Flying Dutchman premiered in New York on Monday, March 2.
Richard Wagner’s opera began its near month long run at the Met Opera, with the final performance being on Friday, March 27.
In addition to the Abu Dhabi Festival, the new show was co-produced by the Metropolitan Opera, Dutch National Opera and Quebec Opera.
Attending the lavish premiere in New York was a range of UAE dignitaries led by Abu Dhabi Festival director and head of the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation Huda Ibrahim Alkhamis, UAE Permanent Representative to the United Nations Lana Nusseibeh and Consul General of the UAE in New York Abdalla Shaheen.
The strong early reviews from US stage critics for The Flying Dutchman elicited satisfaction from all involved, with Russian baritone Evgeny Nikitin doing a sterling job after being drafted in as a late replacement for Welsh star Bryn Terfel, who had to pull out after falling and fracturing his leg in January.
When it comes to the production, Alkhamis expressed pride in Abu Dhabi Festival’s association with the prestigious Metropolitan Opera.
“There are few opera houses in the world that have contributed as much to their craft as the Metropolitan Opera has,” she said. “There is also no better way to strengthen the arts and foster creative exchange between cultures than through collaboration. The Abu Dhabi Festival is proud to join with the Met in its first-ever partnership with an Arab institution.”
Metropolitan Opera general manager Peter Gelb shared similar sentiments: "We are delighted that the Abu Dhabi Festival was able to join us as a co-producer of the new production of Der Fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman), we are grateful for their support and look forward to future collaborations."
Abu Dhabi Festival cultural outreach
In addition to hosting its own festival in the capital — set to run from Tuesday to Thursday, March 31 to April 9 – the New York event is part of Abu Dhabi Festival's expansive international programme, which includes further co-productions in Germany, Spain and Poland.
One of which was a Berlin concert by Iraqi oud maestro Naseer Shamma on February 1.
Other events ahead include a fully commissioned concert by Syrian clarinettist Kinan Azmeh and New York quartet Brooklyn Rider, also in Berlin on Wednesday, May 13, and a trio of piano recitals in the Polish capital, Warsaw, in celebration of the 250th and 210th anniversaries of Beethoven's and Chopin's births, respectively.
Abu Dhabi Festival is also supporting a string of international shows by Palestinian crooner Omar Kamal, which includes a date in New York's Jazz at Lincoln Centre on Saturday, March 21 and Santiago, Chile later in June.
Alkhamis stated such productions and international collaborations enhance Abu Dhabi Festival’s role in building cultural bridges between the UAE and the world.
“As the United Arab Emirates experiences a cultural renaissance, the opportunities for dialogue and exchange only grow, and the Abu Dhabi Festival has become a vital platform for the cultural diplomacy that is building bridges between nations and between peoples,” she said.

Education reform in Abu Dhabi
The emirate’s public education system has been in a constant state of change since the New School Model was launched in 2010 by the Abu Dhabi Education Council. The NSM, which is also known as the Abu Dhabi School Model, transformed the public school curriculum by introducing bilingual education starting with students from grades one to five. Under this new curriculum, the children spend half the day learning in Arabic and half in English – being taught maths, science and English language by mostly Western educated, native English speakers. The NSM curriculum also moved away from rote learning and required teachers to develop a “child-centered learning environment” that promoted critical thinking and independent learning. The NSM expanded by one grade each year and by the 2017-2018 academic year, it will have reached the high school level. Major reforms to the high school curriculum were announced in 2015. The two-stream curriculum, which allowed pupils to elect to follow a science or humanities course of study, was eliminated. In its place was a singular curriculum in which stem -- science, technology, engineering and maths – accounted for at least 50 per cent of all subjects. In 2016, Adec announced additional changes, including the introduction of two levels of maths and physics – advanced or general – to pupils in Grade 10, and a new core subject, career guidance, for grades 10 to 12; and a digital technology and innovation course for Grade 9. Next year, the focus will be on launching a new moral education subject to teach pupils from grades 1 to 9 character and morality, civic studies, cultural studies and the individual and the community.
One in four Americans don't plan to retire
Nearly a quarter of Americans say they never plan to retire, according to a poll that suggests a disconnection between individuals' retirement plans and the realities of ageing in the workforce.
Experts say illness, injury, layoffs and caregiving responsibilities often force older workers to leave their jobs sooner than they'd like.
According to the poll from The Associated Press-NORC Centre for Public Affairs Research, 23 per cent of workers, including nearly two in 10 of those over 50, don't expect to stop working. Roughly another quarter of Americans say they will continue working beyond their 65th birthday.
According to government data, about one in five people 65 and older was working or actively looking for a job in June. The study surveyed 1,423 adults in February this year.
For many, money has a lot to do with the decision to keep working.
"The average retirement age that we see in the data has gone up a little bit, but it hasn't gone up that much," says Anqi Chen, assistant director of savings research at the Centre for Retirement Research at Boston College. "So people have to live in retirement much longer, and they may not have enough assets to support themselves in retirement."
When asked how financially comfortable they feel about retirement, 14 per cent of Americans under the age of 50 and 29 per cent over 50 say they feel extremely or very prepared, according to the poll. About another four in 10 older adults say they do feel somewhat prepared, while just about one-third feel unprepared.
"One of the things about thinking about never retiring is that you didn't save a whole lot of money," says Ronni Bennett, 78, who was pushed out of her job as a New York City-based website editor at 63.
She searched for work in the immediate aftermath of her layoff, a process she describes as akin to "banging my head against a wall." Finding Manhattan too expensive without a steady stream of income, she eventually moved to Portland, Maine. A few years later, she moved again, to Lake Oswego, Oregon. "Sometimes I fantasise that if I win the lottery, I'd go back to New York," says Ms Bennett.

What you as a drone operator need to know
A permit and licence is required to fly a drone legally in Dubai.
Sanad Academy is the United Arab Emirate’s first RPA (Remotely Piloted Aircraft) training and certification specialists endorsed by the Dubai Civil Aviation authority.
It is responsible to train, test and certify drone operators and drones in UAE with DCAA Endorsement.
“We are teaching people how to fly in accordance with the laws of the UAE,” said Ahmad Al Hamadi, a trainer at Sanad.
“We can show how the aircraft work and how they are operated. They are relatively easy to use, but they need responsible pilots.
“Pilots have to be mature. They are given a map of where they can and can’t fly in the UAE and we make these points clear in the lectures we give.
“You cannot fly a drone without registration under any circumstances.”
Larger drones are harder to fly, and have a different response to location control. There are no brakes in the air, so the larger drones have more power.
The Sanad Academy has a designated area to fly off the Al Ain Road near Skydive Dubai to show pilots how to fly responsibly.
“As UAS technology becomes mainstream, it is important to build wider awareness on how to integrate it into commerce and our personal lives,” said Major General Abdulla Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief, Dubai Police.
“Operators must undergo proper training and certification to ensure safety and compliance.
“Dubai’s airspace will undoubtedly experience increased traffic as UAS innovations become commonplace, the Forum allows commercial users to learn of best practice applications to implement UAS safely and legally, while benefitting a whole range of industries.”
