Why the hate for Nickelback?

Mike Kroeger is puzzled at the amount of hatred levelled at the band, but he says continued success is the best response

Nickelback have as many fans as detractors.

There are now a plethora of anti-Nickelback Facebook groups, Tumblr accounts and web pages dedicated to the cause.

In June this year, an article in the Idaho-based Boise Weekly turned viral when the journalist Josh Gross implored readers not to attend Nickelback’s forthcoming gig.

“You can spend $45 to go see Nickelback this week,” he began. “Or you could buy 45 hammers from the dollar store, hang them from the ceiling at eye level and spend the evenings banging the demon out of your dome.”

Kroeger thinks the hate stems from a false perception of the group.

“I think some people think that we take ourselves very seriously and we are real ego-heads. We take playing live and our music seriously, but the whole thing about being famous, it really doesn’t matter to us,” he says. “But that’s how it goes. None of that stuff really hurts us because we don’t really care.”
