Music composer duo Salim and Sulaiman Merchant made their debut in the capital at the Emirates Palace on Friday night as part of their show Namaste Abu Dhabi for Abu Dhabi Summer Season. The show started right on time, which is rare when it comes to Bollywood-related events.
Salim Merchant took the stage first, opening with Aye Khuda and Aashayein, before welcoming his brother Sulaiman on stage with a little jugalbandi with the percussionists.
They tried to engage with the audience encouraging them to join in on their chartbusters Ishq Wala Love and Shukranallah, but the crowd at this show seemed rather mellow, preferring to listen than join in.
Salim Merchant, who was previously one of the judges for Indian Idol, picked the winner of the 2012 edition, Vipul Mehta, to perform with the duo at the Abu Dhabi show. He got off to a rather screechy start with Bulleya, but showcased his range first with the soulful Yeh Hosla, peppy Haule Haule and the high-on-energy Aadat Se Majboor.
And then there was Raj Pandit, a singer with the composer duo’s band for the show, who may have been on the sidelines, but stood out with his amazing energy, stage presence, the ability to hit high notes and mellifluous voice.
Bollywood playback singer Aditi Singh Sharma, who seemed as comfortable with the mellow Mar Jawaan as she was with the high energy Suraj Dooba Hai, provided the female vocals.
As with most Bollywood concerts, there was a segment dedicated to retro hits, in this case RD Burman's hits from the 70s, featuring songs like Bachne Ae Haseeno, Piya Tu and Om Shanti Om, among others, which are always crowd pleasers.

After a short break, the duo returned with a couple of their devotional songs – they have been releasing one every five years over Ramadan – Bismillah and Noor – E-Illahi, for which they collaborated with the iconic Pakistani sufi singer Abida Parveen.
They turned up the tempo again first with a medley of love songs, including Khudaya Ve and Kuch Khaas, following it up with more upbeat songs, such as Tauba Tauba and Jugni, before rounding off the night with one of their biggest hits, Ainvayi Ainvayi.
Despite excellent performances by the duo, the band and the singers, I walked out feeling a little shortchanged.
Firstly, quite a few of the songs that were performed in the second half of the show, such as Kawa Kawa, Chaiyya Chaiyya, Channa Mereya and Dua, were not a part of the duo's repertoire, and seemed to have been put in to please the crowds. The addition of the dhol and mixing the popular hits with pop songs like Bruno Mars's 24K, Ed Sheeran's Shape of You and Justin Beiber's Let Me Love You, were nice touches though.
Second, this event was touted as a celebration of the 70th anniversary of India’s independence day, but they did not sing a single patriotic song.
Previous Indian independence day celebration concerts, Shreya Ghoshal last year, and Sunidhi Chauhan the year before last, saw an entire segment dedicated to patriotic songs. This, despite the fact that the composer duo worked on the hugely popular film Chak De! India, the title track of which would have surely had the crowds cheering.
They also released a single Mera Desh Hi Dharam, composed on the request of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to mark independence day this year, but it did not make it to the show.
The duo, along with their troupe did put on a good show, but a better playlist, that included more of their songs, would have definitely taken it up a notch.
Five famous companies founded by teens
There are numerous success stories of teen businesses that were created in college dorm rooms and other modest circumstances. Below are some of the most recognisable names in the industry:

Peter Buck, a family friend, lent him $1,000 and together, they opened Pete’s Super Submarines. A few years later, the company was rebranded and called Subway.
- Mashable: In 2005, Pete Cashmore created Mashable in Scotland when he was a teenager. The site was then a technology blog. Over the next few decades, Mr Cashmore has turned Mashable into a global media company.
- Oculus VR: Palmer Luckey founded Oculus VR in June 2012, when he was 19. In August that year, Oculus launched its Kickstarter campaign and raised more than $1 million in three days. Facebook bought Oculus for $2 billion two years later.

The smuggler
Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.
Khouli conviction
Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.
- An Egyptian Mummy mask dating from 700BC-30BC, is on offer for £11,807 ($15,275) online by a seller in Mexico
- A coffin lid dating back to 664BC-332BC was offered for sale by a Colorado-based art dealer, with a starting price of $65,000
- A shabti that was on sale through a Chicago-based coin dealer, dating from 1567BC-1085BC, is up for $1,950

The major Hashd factions linked to Iran:
Badr Organisation: Seen as the most militarily capable faction in the Hashd. Iraqi Shiite exiles opposed to Saddam Hussein set up the group in Tehran in the early 1980s as the Badr Corps under the supervision of the Iran Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC). The militia exalts Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei but intermittently cooperated with the US military.
Saraya Al Salam (Peace Brigade): Comprised of former members of the officially defunct Mahdi Army, a militia that was commanded by Iraqi cleric Moqtada Al Sadr and fought US and Iraqi government and other forces between 2004 and 2008. As part of a political overhaul aimed as casting Mr Al Sadr as a more nationalist and less sectarian figure, the cleric formed Saraya Al Salam in 2014. The group’s relations with Iran has been volatile.
Kataeb Hezbollah: The group, which is fighting on behalf of the Bashar Al Assad government in Syria, traces its origins to attacks on US forces in Iraq in 2004 and adopts a tough stance against Washington, calling the United States “the enemy of humanity”.
Asaeb Ahl Al Haq: An offshoot of the Mahdi Army active in Syria. Asaeb Ahl Al Haq’s leader Qais al Khazali was a student of Mr Al Moqtada’s late father Mohammed Sadeq Al Sadr, a prominent Shiite cleric who was killed during Saddam Hussein’s rule.
Harakat Hezbollah Al Nujaba: Formed in 2013 to fight alongside Mr Al Assad’s loyalists in Syria before joining the Hashd. The group is seen as among the most ideological and sectarian-driven Hashd militias in Syria and is the major recruiter of foreign fighters to Syria.
Saraya Al Khorasani: The ICRG formed Saraya Al Khorasani in the mid-1990s and the group is seen as the most ideologically attached to Iran among Tehran’s satellites in Iraq.
