For understandable reasons, it's been a relatively quiet year in terms of live concerts around the world. However, it looks like things will certainly be picking up in 2021.
Atif Aslam is set to perform at Dubai World Trade Centre on Friday, January 15. The celebrated Pakistani singer is well known for bridging the cultural gap between Pakistan and India by contributing to Bollywood with hit songs such as Tere Bin and Jeena Jeena. Fans at the concert can expect to hear popular numbers including Woh Lamhe, Tu Jaane Na and O Saathi from the Bollywood film Baaghi 2.
The concert forms part of the annual Dubai Shopping Festival, which will take place from Thursday, December 17, to Saturday, January 30.
“Atif Aslam is a major Bollywood star and his appearance in Dubai is a great addition to the diverse range of entertainment on offer at this year’s Dubai Shopping Festival. Atif’s performance at the Dubai World Trade Centre is sure to be one of the highlights of this year’s DSF and a must-see for fans and music lovers from all over the world,” says Ahmed Al Khaja, chief executive of Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment.
The event will also mark Aslam’s first live performance since Covid-19 restrictions came into effect around the world.
The event has been organised by Blu Blood, which was behind Sonu Nigam's social-distancing-friendly concert held in Dubai in August. Safety precautions will be in place for Aslam's concert, including temperature checks and social distancing. The Dubai World Trade Centre's original 4,400 capacity will be reduced to 1,400 available paired seats, while talent and crew will also be following social distancing protocols.
Prices have not yet been announced, but tickets will soon be available on platinumlist.net.
Aslam is not the only star set to perform as part of DSF. British comedian Jack Whitehall will host a show at the Dubai World Trade Centre on Thursday, January 14, as part of the festival, while DJ Alan Walker will perform at Dubai's Coca-Cola Arena on Thursday, January 7.
There will also be a multi-artist closing concert at the Coca-Cola Arena to mark the end of DSF, with acts yet to be announced.

Who was Alfred Nobel?
The Nobel Prize was created by wealthy Swedish chemist and entrepreneur Alfred Nobel.
- In his will he dictated that the bulk of his estate should be used to fund "prizes to those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind".
- Nobel is best known as the inventor of dynamite, but also wrote poetry and drama and could speak Russian, French, English and German by the age of 17. The five original prize categories reflect the interests closest to his heart.
- Nobel died in 1896 but it took until 1901, following a legal battle over his will, before the first prizes were awarded.
Farage on Muslim Brotherhood
Nigel Farage told Reform's annual conference that the party will proscribe the Muslim Brotherhood if he becomes Prime Minister.
"We will stop dangerous organisations with links to terrorism operating in our country," he said. "Quite why we've been so gutless about this – both Labour and Conservative – I don't know.
“All across the Middle East, countries have banned and proscribed the Muslim Brotherhood as a dangerous organisation. We will do the very same.”
It is 10 years since a ground-breaking report into the Muslim Brotherhood by Sir John Jenkins.
Among the former diplomat's findings was an assessment that “the use of extreme violence in the pursuit of the perfect Islamic society” has “never been institutionally disowned” by the movement.
The prime minister at the time, David Cameron, who commissioned the report, said membership or association with the Muslim Brotherhood was a "possible indicator of extremism" but it would not be banned.

A little about CVRL
Founded in 1985 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, the Central Veterinary Research Laboratory (CVRL) is a government diagnostic centre that provides testing and research facilities to the UAE and neighbouring countries.
One of its main goals is to provide permanent treatment solutions for veterinary related diseases.
The taxidermy centre was established 12 years ago and is headed by Dr Ulrich Wernery.
Dr Amal Khalid Alias revealed a recent case of a woman with daughters, who specifically wanted a boy.
A semen analysis of the father showed abnormal sperm so the couple required IVF.
Out of 21 eggs collected, six were unused leaving 15 suitable for IVF.
A specific procedure was used, called intracytoplasmic sperm injection where a single sperm cell is inserted into the egg.
On day three of the process, 14 embryos were biopsied for gender selection.
The next day, a pre-implantation genetic report revealed four normal male embryos, three female and seven abnormal samples.
Day five of the treatment saw two male embryos transferred to the patient.
The woman recorded a positive pregnancy test two weeks later.

How Filipinos in the UAE invest
A recent survey of 10,000 Filipino expatriates in the UAE found that 82 per cent have plans to invest, primarily in property. This is significantly higher than the 2014 poll showing only two out of 10 Filipinos planned to invest.
Fifty-five percent said they plan to invest in property, according to the poll conducted by the New Perspective Media Group, organiser of the Philippine Property and Investment Exhibition. Acquiring a franchised business or starting up a small business was preferred by 25 per cent and 15 per cent said they will invest in mutual funds. The rest said they are keen to invest in insurance (3 per cent) and gold (2 per cent).
Of the 5,500 respondents who preferred property as their primary investment, 54 per cent said they plan to make the purchase within the next year. Manila was the top location, preferred by 53 per cent.
