Amal Maher to perform online concert at the Egyptian pyramids

Amal Maher is the latest star to announce an online concert for Friday, June 12.

The Egyptian singer will play an audience-free set to be streamed on the platform Shahid, under its paid subscriber tier Shahid VIP.

She follows successful online performances by the likes of Lebanese singers Elissa and Najwa Karam and Saudi Arabia's Mohammed Abdo.

Beginning from 11pm, Maher and her six-piece band will take up space at the mouth of the Giza pyramids and perform a selection of solo material, including latest single Matsebnish, and classics from Egypt's golden age of music.

A modern talent with classical tastes

Discovered at 15 years old, Maher forged her own path in the regional music scene with her elegant brand of Arabic pop music that mixed contemporary with classical.

A graduate of Egypt's Higher Conservatory Institute, Maher, 35, found success with the release of her 2004 debut album Isa 'In', which was home to hits Eini Aliki Ta Tiba and Makanak.

The album laid the ground work for a career full of sophisticated pop tunes, blending modern music sensibilities with classic influences of legendary Arabic singers such Umm Kulthum and Fairuz.

With her easy going vibe and deep sultry vocals, Amal views herself as a modern artist with a vintage twist.

"I want to represent my generation," she told The National in a 2015 interview.

“As a youngster, I was always influenced by singers and they were role models, in the way I behaved and my appearance. I am aware of that now, as a singer in my own right. I didn’t want to give any mixed messages to my fans, in that I am so different from my video clips or on Instagram. I want it to be ‘what you see is what you get’."
