Palestinian-Jordanian rapper The Synaptik, Saudi artist Asayel and Egyptian hip-hop star Karim Osama are set to perform at the Bred Abu Dhabi festival in April. Returning to the temporary, purpose-built outdoor venue on Yas Island, the music and culture festival will run from April 23 to 27.
To celebrate the announcement, the festival has released its own anthem Hena, a thumping ode to the resilience of youth culture. While more artist are expected to be announced closer to the event, those already confirmed bring considerable pedigree.
The Synaptik, whose real name is Laith Al Husseini, is known for his evocative lyrics. His latest album, Al Taman, is a 20-song collection that has deeply personal themes, tackling issues such as the challenges of maintaining mental well-being and coming to terms with life’s disappointments – subjects rarely explored in Arabic hip-hop.
Asayel recently released her debut single, Asliyah, a vibrant track infused with Hejazi slang from her native Saudi region, which includes Makkah and Jeddah. She displayed her showmanship with a well-received set at last year’s Soundstorm festival in Riyadh.
Osama, meanwhile, has built a reputation for energetic pop tracks enriched with the electro-influenced sounds of Mahraganat music.
While the details of this year’s Bred Abu Dhabi remain under wraps, last year’s event left a lasting impression. The sprawling site was divided into three sections, with the AMP Stage and the main Arena Stage at opposite ends.
At its heart was a basketball and futsal court hosting competitive matches featuring local teams. Fashion and merchandise stalls were scattered throughout the venue, offering plenty to explore, while nearly 20 food outlets – including exclusive pop-ups like New York’s Scarr’s Pizza and deli sandwiches from The Ocky Way – were also on site.
The festival's headline acts last year included UK rappers Aitch and AJ Tracey, as well as US hip-hop stars Offset and DJ Metro Boomin.

They'll then be sent a special ballot voting kit by mail either to their address, the Consulate General of Canada to the UAE in Dubai or The Embassy of Canada in Abu Dhabi

The flights
The closest international airport to the TMB trail is Geneva (just over an hour’s drive from the French ski town of Chamonix where most people start and end the walk). Direct flights from the UAE to Geneva are available with Etihad and Emirates from about Dh2,790 including taxes.
The trek
The Tour du Mont Blanc takes about 10 to 14 days to complete if walked in its entirety, but by using the services of a tour operator such as Raw Travel, a shorter “highlights” version allows you to complete the best of the route in a week, from Dh6,750 per person. The trails are blocked by snow from about late October to early May. Most people walk in July and August, but be warned that trails are often uncomfortably busy at this time and it can be very hot. The prime months are June and September.

The trek: Make sure that whatever tour company you select to climb Kilimanjaro, that it is a reputable one. The way to climb successfully would be with experienced guides and porters, from a company committed to quality, safety and an ethical approach to the mountain and its staff. Sonia Nazareth booked a VIP package through Safari Africa. The tour works out to $4,775 (Dh17,538) per person, based on a 4-person booking scheme, for 9 nights on the mountain (including one night before and after the trek at Arusha). The price includes all meals, a head guide, an assistant guide for every 2 trekkers, porters to carry the luggage, a cook and kitchen staff, a dining and mess tent, a sleeping tent set up for 2 persons, a chemical toilet and park entrance fees. The tiny ration of heated water provided for our bath in our makeshift private bathroom stall was the greatest luxury. A standard package, also based on a 4-person booking, works out to $3,050 (Dh11,202) per person.
When to go: You can climb Kili at any time of year, but the best months to ascend are January-February and September-October. Also good are July and August, if you’re tolerant of the colder weather that winter brings.
Do not underestimate the importance of kit. Even if you’re travelling at a relatively pleasant time, be geared up for the cold and the rain.

His life in brief: Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school. He was arrested several times by Israel for what were deemed to be inciteful poems. Most of his work focused on the love and yearning for his homeland, and he was regarded the Palestinian poet of resistance. Over the course of his life, he published more than 30 poetry collections and books of prose, with his work translated into more than 20 languages. Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife. Darwish died on August 9, 2008 after undergoing heart surgery in the United States. He was later buried in Ramallah where a shrine was erected in his honour.
Fireball
A plume of black smoke rose from a fuel storage facility in the village of Kalynivka outside Kyiv on Friday after Russia said it had destroyed the military site with Kalibr cruise missiles.
"On the evening of March 24, Kalibr high-precision sea-based cruise missiles attacked a fuel base in the village of Kalynivka near Kyiv," the Russian defence ministry said in a statement.
Ukraine confirmed the strike, saying the village some 40 kilometres south-west of Kyiv was targeted.
