'Wonder Woman 3' is coming: Third film in trilogy will be 'fast-tracked' by Warner Bros

Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot are set to return for Wonder Woman 3.

The film has been fast-tracked for development by Warner Bros, hot on the heels of Wonder Woman 1984, which was released on Christmas Day in the US and on December 17 in the UAE.

Warner Bros said that despite the pandemic, the third Wonder Woman film will have a traditional cinematic release.

"As fans around the world continue to embrace Diana Prince, driving the strong opening weekend performance of Wonder Woman 1984, we are excited to be able to continue her story with our real life Wonder Women — Gal and Patty — who will return to conclude the long-planned theatrical trilogy," Warner Bros chief Toby Emmerich said in a statement to Variety.

Wonder Woman 1984 has managed one of the better box-office debuts of the pandemic, opening with $16.7 million over Christmas weekend, according to studio estimates.

The sequel to 2017's Wonder Woman experienced numerous delays before finally settling on a Christmas Day release.

However, there was some controversy as Warner Bros also announced the film would stream on HBO Max on the same day as its US release date, allowing viewers to forgo the cinema and watch the film from home.

Wonder Woman 1984 sees Gadot reprise her role as the lasso-spinning superhero after 2017's hit debut. The sequel is set during the height of the Cold War, where Wonder Woman takes on media businessman Maxwell Lord and friend-turned-enemy The Cheetah, played by Kristen Wiig.
