The brand new Top Gun: Maverick was released at San Diego Comic-Con on July 19, with the star of the movie, Tom Cruise, making a surprise appearance at the convention. The movie, which is set for release in 2020, is the sequel to 1986's Top Gun. At the Paramount Pictures panel, Cruise introduced the trailer, describing the original film and its sequel as a "love letter to aviation". The trailer shows Cruise's character, Maverick, having aged in the last 34 years and refusing to retire. Naturally there are plenty of stunts, as the jets launching off aircraft carriers and manoeuvres though tight spots. The trailer sees Maverick in a row with Ed Harris’s character, who warns him, "Your kind is headed for extinction," to which the pilot replies, "Maybe so sir, but not today." Fans have questions for the film's makers, mainly, 'Where is Iceman?' Val Kilmer is set to feature in the movie and is listed in the IMDB credits, so his absence from the trailer has left fans perplexed. Cruise has said that the aerial shots are "all real", adding, "I really wanted to give you all an experience of what it is to be inside that aircraft." He also addressed fan's long wait for the follow-up, saying, "Thirty-four years you guys have been very patient with me, and I felt it was my responsibility to finally really deliver for you."
