Children at his school may have teased him over his name, but Corona De Vries has a friend in Tom Hanks.
The Oscar-winning actor this week penned a heartfelt note to the 8-year-old Australian boy, after De Vries revealed he was being bullied at school.
The schoolboy, from Queensland's Gold Coast, originally reached out to Hanks after learning the Forrest Gump star had contracted Covid-19.
"I heard on the news you and your wife had caught the coronavirus," De Vries wrote in a letter to the actor, sent on April 6, according to Channel 7 News. "Are you OK? I love my name but at school, people call me the coronavirus. I get very sad and angry when people call me this."
Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson, both 63, were diagnosed with Covid-19 while in Australia in March; they have both since made a full recovery.
In response to De Vries's note, the Cast Away star sent back a typed letter, along with a Corona-branded typewriter he had taken with him to Australia.
"Your letter made my wife and I feel so wonderful! Thank you for being such a good friend – friends make friends feel good when they are down," Hanks wrote.
The actor added that De Vries's letter had made him feel better, before complementing his name.
"You know, you are the only person I've ever known to have the name Corona – like the ring around the sun, a crown," Hanks wrote.
"I thought this typewriter would suit you. Ask a grown up how it works. And use it to write me back."
The Academy Award winner also scrawled a hand-written note at the bottom of the letter: "PS You got a friend in me! T."
The postscript refers to the song of the same name, which is the theme tune to Hanks's hit Pixar film, Toy Story.
The actor is known for his love of antique typewriters, revealing to The New York Times last year that he had whittled his collection down to 120 models.
"They're brilliant combinations of art and engineering," Hanks said. "Every time you type something on a typewriter, it is a one-of-a-kind work of art."
The actor is so enamoured with the invention that he even created an app, named Hanx Writer, that lets users create messages in typewriter font.

As social media apps are becoming more and more consumed by health experts and nutritionists who are using it to awareness and encourage patients to engage in physical activity.
Elizabeth Watson, a personal trainer from Stay Fit gym in Abu Dhabi suggests that “individuals can use social media as a means of keeping fit, there are a lot of great exercises you can do and train from experts at home just by watching videos on YouTube”.
Norlyn Torrena, a clinical nutritionist from Burjeel Hospital advises her clients to be more technologically active “most of my clients are so engaged with their phones that I advise them to download applications that offer health related services”.
Torrena said that “most people believe that dieting and keeping fit is boring”.
However, by using social media apps keeping fit means that people are “modern and are kept up to date with the latest heath tips and trends”.
“It can be a guide to a healthy lifestyle and exercise if used in the correct way, so I really encourage my clients to download health applications” said Mrs Torrena.
People can also connect with each other and exchange “tips and notes, it’s extremely healthy and fun”.

How does ToTok work?
The calling app is available to download on Google Play and Apple App Store
To successfully install ToTok, users are asked to enter their phone number and then create a nickname.
The app then gives users the option add their existing phone contacts, allowing them to immediately contact people also using the application by video or voice call or via message.
Users can also invite other contacts to download ToTok to allow them to make contact through the app.

Teachers' pay - what you need to know
Pay varies significantly depending on the school, its rating and the curriculum. Here's a rough guide as of January 2021:
- top end schools tend to pay Dh16,000-17,000 a month - plus a monthly housing allowance of up to Dh6,000. These tend to be British curriculum schools rated 'outstanding' or 'very good', followed by American schools
- average salary across curriculums and skill levels is about Dh10,000, recruiters say
- it is becoming more common for schools to provide accommodation, sometimes in an apartment block with other teachers, rather than hand teachers a cash housing allowance
- some strong performing schools have cut back on salaries since the pandemic began, sometimes offering Dh16,000 including the housing allowance, which reflects the slump in rental costs, and sheer demand for jobs
