English actor Rupert Grint, who played Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter films, has set a new Instagram record when he joined the photo sharing app for the first time last week.

"Only 10 years late, but here I am," the actor, 32, commented with his first photo.

The actor's account is now the fastest to reach one million followers, at a record of four hours and one minutes, according to the Guinness World Records. This was 43 minutes faster than when Sir David Attenborough reached the milestone when he joined in September.

Grint became a father earlier this year and his first photo was of his six-month-old baby girl born in May. "Here to introduce you all to Wednesday G Grint," he wrote.

At the time of writing and a week after joining, the actor has more than 3.3 million followers on his Instagram.

In addition to his work in the Harry Potter films, Grint also starred in the 2006 dramedy Driving Lessons and Cherrybomb in 2010. After finishing the Harry Potter films, one of his first roles was in the 2012 anti-war film Into the White. More recently, he starred in in the Apple TV+ series Servant and Sick Note, airing on Netflix.

Tearful appearance

Chancellor Rachel Reeves set markets on edge as she appeared visibly distraught in parliament on Wednesday.

Legislative setbacks for the government have blown a new hole in the budgetary calculations at a time when the deficit is stubbornly large and the economy is struggling to grow.

She appeared with Keir Starmer on Thursday and the pair embraced, but he had failed to give her his backing as she cried a day earlier.

A spokesman said her upset demeanour was due to a personal matter.
