Nadine Labaki’s ‘Capernaum’ is up for a Golden Globe becoming the first Lebanese film to ever be nominated

Nadine Labaki's Capernaum was among the nominees at this afternoon's nomination announcement. The film will compete in the Best Picture – Foreign Language category, competing against big hitters such as Alfonso Cuaron's hotly tipped Roma and Hirokazu Koreeda's Palme d'Or-winning Shoplifters.

Actors Terry Crews, Danai Gurira, Leslie Mann and Christian Slater announced the nominees at the Beverley Hilton hotel in Los Angeles, alongside Golden Globe ambassador Isan Elba, Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Meher Tatna and Dick Clark Productions executive VP of television Barry Adelman.

Capernaum, Labaki's third film, uses non-actors to tell its story of children in the slums of Beirut. It tackles the ills of life on the street and is hung around a central conceit, of a child who sues his parents for having produced him.

The trailer for Capernaum:

The Globes is the most cumbersome of the major award ceremonies, with awards for both film and TV, and categories subdivided into drama and musical or comedy. Among the key takeaways were a rare showing for Marvel in the Best Picture – Drama category, courtesy of Black Panther – it will compete against BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, If Beale Street Could Talk and A Star Is Born, and a strong showing for the main streaming services – Amazon's The Marvelous Mrs Maisel and A Very English Scandal were among their nominations in the TV section, while Netflix picked up three nods for Alfonso Cuaron's movie Roma alone.

Tatna also announced that this year's award would feature a new Achievement in Television Award, the TV equivalent of its existing Cecil B Demille Award for movies. The winner will be announced in the coming days.

The smuggler

Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.

Khouli conviction

Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

For sale

A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.
