John Wick fans are in for a treat as it's been announced that the popular franchise will not only see a fourth instalment but a fifth one as well.
Lionsgate has said in an annoucement that it's aiming to shoot both John Wick 4 and 5 back-to-back next year with a release date for John Wick 4 set for May 27, 2022 after the coronavirus pandemic delayed filming this year.
"We're also busy preparing scripts for the next two instalments of our John Wick action franchise, with John Wick 4 slated to hit theatres Memorial Day weekend 2022. We hope to shoot both John Wick 4 and 5 back to back when Keanu [Reeves] becomes available early next year," said Lionsgate chief executive Jon Feltheimer in a statement.
The first John Wick film released in 2014 and stars Reeves as the titular character. In the film, Reeves plays a retired hitman who returns to being an assassin while seeking vengeance against a group of Russian gangsters who steal his car and kill his puppy gifted to him by his late wife.
After the success of the film first, two sequels John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017) and John Wick: Chapter 3 (2019) were released, both earning critical acclaim. The franchise has made over $579 million (Dh2.12b) internationally since debuting in 2014.
The most recent film sees Wick trying to survive as a $14 million (Dh51.4m) bounty for his life has been placed on him by the same international assassin organisation he once belonged to.
