Is Elijah Wood the world's most polite video game player? His 'Animal Crossing' turnip behaviour suggests so

He may be one of the most famous residents of Middle-earth, but this week Elijah Wood is exploring new horizons.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons, that is, after the Lord of the Rings star made a surprise visit to a player's virtual island in the popular video game.

And it wasn't that one ring the American actor was looking to offload – instead, Wood made a very polite visit to trade some of his turnips, a hot commodity in the Nintendo game.

The actor was a model tourist according to Twitter user Jessa, who received a direct message from the star.

Animal Crossing, which released its fifth edition last month, is a real-time life simulation that allows players to live a relaxed life on a desert island, gathering fruit, keeping up with friends and just generally chilling out.

One of the game's many objectives is to buy turnips when they're cheap and then trade them at as high a price as possible (yes, like a root vegetable stock market).

If prices on your own personal island are low, you can visit other players' island to sell them on – as was the case with Jessa.

She revealed her price for turnips was 599 bells – the vegetables usually go for between 300 to 400 bells – and Wood was quick send her a DM.

"Would love your dodo code to sell these turnips!" he wrote, according to a screenshot shared by Jessa.

The "dodo code" is the passcode other players need to visit a user's island, and Jessa was happy to oblige.

"Guys, I tweeted my turnip prices and Elijah Wood just came to my island and hung out. This is the best day in quarantine yet," she wrote.

How do we know this wasn't an imposter? Well, Wood has since liked several tweets about the whole exchange from his verified Twitter account.

Wood, 39, proved to be an exemplary visitor, according to further screenshots shared by Jessa, politely asking to pick fruit from her island.

The star, who has voiced video games including 11-11: Memories Retold and Transference, also described her island as "beautiful" and praised Knives Out director Rian Johnson, in the heart-warming exchange.

"It was so much fun," Jessa told The Verge. "He was so nice and wholesome."
