Packed with premieres, panels and workshops, this year’s Cairo International Film Festival is showing 84 films from 43 countries.
Now in its 42nd year, the festival has attracted big names from the world of entertainment, including masterclasses and in-conversations with the likes of Sir Christopher Hampton, the screenwriter of Dangerous Liaisons and Atonement, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
British actor Rufus Sewell, star of The Holiday and A Knight's Tale, shared his insights into his decades-long career in the industry, while in the Meet the 2020 Arab Stars of Tomorrow showcase, Egyptian actress and model Tara Emad shared what she has learnt in her career so far, as well as her hopes for the country's cinematic future.

Panels including Mind My Gender: Being a Woman in the Creative Industry, Harder Than It Looks: The Art and Business of Making Short Films, and A How-To on the Legal Elements of Filmmaking were fascinating for both students and fans of film. And the stars were out in force for the opening ceremony, with the likes of Ahmed El Sakka, Mona Zaki and Injy El Mokkaddem all walking the red carpet.
Midnight screenings of Ammar (from Turkey), Beasts Clawing at Straws (South Korea), Baby (Spain), Come True (Canada), Sideshow (UK), Sleep (Germany) and Teddy (France) saw films from across the globe reach Middle Eastern audiences for the first time, while the 100 Years of Fellini tribute showcased some of the great films by the Italian maestro, with La Dolce Vita, Juliet of the Spirits, Nights of Cabiria, Fellini of the Spirits and 8½ all screened throughout the festival.
Among the film competitions being held, the Horizons of Arab Cinema Competition featured Abdulaziz Alshlahei's The Tambour of Retribution, Nesrine El Zayat's On The Fence, The Fall of Apples Trees (L'Automne Des Pommiers) by Mohamed Mouftakir, The Morphine Melody from Hicham Amal, Roy Arida's Under The Concrete and We Are from There by Wissam Tanios.
WHAT ARE NFTs?
Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are tokens that represent ownership of unique items. They allow the tokenisation of things such as art, collectibles and even real estate.
An NFT can have only one official owner at one time. And since they're minted and secured on the Ethereum blockchain, no one can modify the record of ownership, not even copy-paste it into a new one.
This means NFTs are not interchangeable and cannot be exchanged with other items. In contrast, fungible items, such as fiat currencies, can be exchanged because their value defines them rather than their unique properties.
