The Cairo international Film Festival came to an end last night, with the biggest names in Arab cinema walking the red carpet one last time for the event's closing ceremony.
For its 42nd edition, this year's Cairo International Film Festival presented 84 films from 43 countries. There were premieres, panels and workshops, as well as masterclasses and in-conversations with the likes of Sir Christopher Hampton, the screenwriter of Dangerous Liaisons and Atonement, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
British actor Rufus Sewell, star of The Holiday and A Knight’s Tale, shared his insights into his decades-long career, while in the Meet the 2020 Arab Stars of Tomorrow showcase, Egyptian actress and model Tara Emad shared her hopes for the country’s cinematic future.
Midnight screenings of Ammar (from Turkey), Beasts Clawing at Straws (South Korea), Baby (Spain), Come True (Canada), Sideshow (UK), Sleep (Germany) and Teddy(France) saw films from across the globe reach Middle Eastern audiences for the first time, while the 100 Years of Fellini tribute showcased some of the great films by the Italian maestro, with La Dolce Vita, Juliet of the Spirits, Nights of Cabiria, Fellini of the Spirits and 8½ all screened throughout the festival.

French business
France has organised a delegation of leading businesses to travel to Syria. The group was led by French shipping giant CMA CGM, which struck a 30-year contract in May with the Syrian government to develop and run Latakia port. Also present were water and waste management company Suez, defence multinational Thales, and Ellipse Group, which is currently looking into rehabilitating Syrian hospitals.
