Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt jets into Dubai for family trip

Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt has jetted into Dubai alongside his wife Maanayata to visit his two children.

The star is currently taking a break from acting as he undergoes treatment for lung cancer. He announced his health news to his 2.2 million Twitter followers in August, urging well-wishers not to worry.

“Hi friends. I am taking a short break from work for some medical treatment. My family and friends are with me and I urge my well-wishers not to worry or unnecessarily speculate. With your love and good wishes, I will be back soon,” the tweet read.

However, the star is said to have made a brief return to the studio last week to wrap up his scenes in upcoming film Shamshera.

And on Tuesday evening, Dutt and Maanayata left Mumbai for a private charter flight to Dubai, where they are said to be taking a 10-day family vacation to spend time with their children Shahraan and Iqra, who have remained in the emirate while their father has undergone medical treatment in India.

On Wednesday morning, Maanayata posted a photo of the pair onboard a private jet, alongside the caption: “en route life.” She also shared a picture of a coffee which featured Dutt’s face made from foam.

The couple were pictured leaving their Mumbai home by waiting paparazzi. Dutt spoke briefly to photographers to remind them to wear their masks for their own safety.

Indian entertainment magazine Filmfare reported that Dutt will receive medical treatment during his time in Dubai. However, sources close to the actor told the Mumbai Mirror that this was simply a personal trip to visit family.

Sanjay Dutt is the son of late Bollywood actors Nargis and Sunil Dutt. His mother passed away in 1981 of pancreatic cancer. His first wife, Richa Sharma, died of a brain tumour in 1996.

His life has been a turbulent one, and he served a 42-month prison sentence from 2013 to 2016 for the illegal possession of weapons connected to the 1993 Mumbai blasts case.

Conflict, drought, famine

Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.

Band Aid

Bob Geldof, singer with the Irish rock group The Boomtown Rats, formed Band Aid in response to the horrific images shown in the news broadcasts.
With Midge Ure of the band Ultravox, he wrote the hit charity single Do They Know it’s Christmas in December 1984, featuring a string of high-profile musicians.
Following the single’s success, the idea to stage a rock concert evolved.
Live Aid was a series of simultaneous concerts that took place at Wembley Stadium in London, John F Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, the US, and at various other venues across the world.
The combined event was broadcast to an estimated worldwide audience of 1.5 billion.
