One Night in Miami actor Kingsley Ben-Adir and The Personal History of David Copperfield actress Morfydd Clark are among this year's nominees for the EE Rising Star Award.
The award is dished out at the annual British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards, which this year will take place on April 11.
The list of five contenders, all British, also includes Rocks actress Bukky Bakray, Conrad Khan, who was in The Huntsman: Winter's War and County Lines, and Sope Dirisu, known for His House and Gangs of London.
Ben-Adir plays Malcolm X in One Night in Miami, the directorial debut of Regina King, while Clark is known for her performance in horror flick Saint Maud.
Previous winners of the award, voted for by the public, include Oscar nominees Tom Hardy and Daniel Kaluuya.
The jury for this year's Rising Star Award shortlist included television producer Krishnendu Majumdar, producer and director Anand Tucker and actresses Naomi Ackie, Jo Hartley and Alicia Vikander.
The full list of nominees for this year's Bafta awards will be announced next week.
Last year's awards, Britain’s top film honours, drew criticism over the lack of diversity in the acting categories, leading to a review by the academy and changes to its membership, voting and campaigning procedures.
The measures include recruiting 1,000 new members from under-represented groups to join the current 6,700-strong voting academy of film industry professionals.
"We've made a number of changes to ensure ... a level playing field that every film and every performance and every director has the chance for their work to be seen," said Bafta chief executive Amanda Berry.
She said details on how April's ceremony would take place would be announced in coming weeks.

Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD)
What is THAAD?
It is considered to be the US' most superior missile defence system.
Production:
It was first created in 2008.
Speed:
THAAD missiles can travel at over Mach 8, so fast that it is hypersonic.
Abilities:
THAAD is designed to take out projectiles, namely ballistic missiles, as they are on their downward trajectory towards their target, otherwise known as the "terminal phase".
Purpose:
To protect high-value strategic sites, such as airfields or population centres.
Range:
THAAD can target projectiles both inside and outside of the Earth's atmosphere, at an altitude of 93 miles above the Earth's surface.
Creators:
Lockheed Martin was originally granted the contract to develop the system in 1992. Defence company Raytheon sub-contracts to develop other major parts of the system, such as ground-based radar.
UAE and THAAD:
In 2011, the UAE became the first country outside of the US to buy two THAAD missile defence systems. It then deployed them in 2016, becoming the first Gulf country to do so.

Pharaoh's curse
British aristocrat Lord Carnarvon, who funded the expedition to find the Tutankhamun tomb, died in a Cairo hotel four months after the crypt was opened.
He had been in poor health for many years after a car crash, and a mosquito bite made worse by a shaving cut led to blood poisoning and pneumonia.
Reports at the time said Lord Carnarvon suffered from “pain as the inflammation affected the nasal passages and eyes”.
Decades later, scientists contended he had died of aspergillosis after inhaling spores of the fungus aspergillus in the tomb, which can lie dormant for months. The fact several others who entered were also found dead withiin a short time led to the myth of the curse.
