Expo 2020 Dubai’s incredible journey has been captured in a video telling the story of the world’s fair, with Hollywood actor Morgan Freeman’s famous voice narrating it.
The seven-minute video, released this week, shows highlights from Expo 2020, including the pavilions, celebrity appearances and some of its key events.

“How do you build the impossible?” Freeman says, at the start of the video.
“A city for humanity. A city for which there are no blueprints. A city to welcome the world,” he says. “The dream. But like all good stories, we should go back to the beginning.”
The video then shows scenes from Paris in 2013, when Dubai won the bid to host Expo 2020.
However, it also highlights the challenges organisers faced, brought about by the onset of the global pandemic in early 2020, six months before Expo was due to begin.
“But as that commitment was becoming a reality, our world as we knew it changed forever,” Freeman says.
“At a time when the world needed it most, we found a true moment of global solidarity.
“With an uncertain future, and a host of new challenges, the greatest hope we have is each other.”
The video features snippets from some of Expo’s 24 million visitors, as well as clips of appearances made by Cristiano Ronaldo, Lewis Hamilton, Alicia Keys and Coldplay.

“As we say our last goodbyes, and head back to the places near and far we call home, we can reflect on the countless experiences we have shared here,” Freeman says.
“Over 20 million of us, from more countries than ever before, leave here united by a shared dream and bounded by a common purpose — every one of us changed by the realisation that ‘I can too’.
“We will build the future that we want for humanity.
“Expo City will live on as a permanent fixture of Dubai and as an enduring beacon of the city’s commitment to creating a future of opportunity, mobility and sustainability.”
Freeman is not the first Hollywood actor to feature in a video promoting Expo 2020 Dubai. Ahead of the world’s fair opening, Chris Hemsworth appeared in a promo video, made in partnership with Emirates.
The advertisement, which was directed by two-time Oscar-winning director Robert Stromberg, features the Thor star walking through a computer-generated version of the Expo 2020 site.
The song Pure Imagination, from the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, is being sung by a children’s choir and reinterpreted by a 70-piece orchestra in the background.

Farage on Muslim Brotherhood
Nigel Farage told Reform's annual conference that the party will proscribe the Muslim Brotherhood if he becomes Prime Minister.
"We will stop dangerous organisations with links to terrorism operating in our country," he said. "Quite why we've been so gutless about this – both Labour and Conservative – I don't know.
“All across the Middle East, countries have banned and proscribed the Muslim Brotherhood as a dangerous organisation. We will do the very same.”
It is 10 years since a ground-breaking report into the Muslim Brotherhood by Sir John Jenkins.
Among the former diplomat's findings was an assessment that “the use of extreme violence in the pursuit of the perfect Islamic society” has “never been institutionally disowned” by the movement.
The prime minister at the time, David Cameron, who commissioned the report, said membership or association with the Muslim Brotherhood was a "possible indicator of extremism" but it would not be banned.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.

Unresolved crisis
Russia and Ukraine have been locked in a bitter conflict since 2014, when Ukraine’s Kremlin-friendly president was ousted, Moscow annexed Crimea and then backed a separatist insurgency in the east.
Fighting between the Russia-backed rebels and Ukrainian forces has killed more than 14,000 people. In 2015, France and Germany helped broker a peace deal, known as the Minsk agreements, that ended large-scale hostilities but failed to bring a political settlement of the conflict.
