Emilia Perez, a musical drama about a Mexican drug lord, has swept the nominations for the 2025 Oscars with 13 nods, a record for a non-English-language movie.
Directed by French filmmaker Jacques Audiard, the movie is nominated for Best Picture, Best Director and Best International Feature Film, as well as gaining song, score, screenplay and production nods. Star Karla Sofia Gascon is a nominee for Best Actress in a Leading Role, while Zoe Saldana is nominated for Best Supporting Actress.
From the Middle East, Palestinian-Israeli film No Other Land, which follows the struggles faced by Palestinian journalist Basel Adra as he tries to protect his West Bank village Masafer Yatta from Israeli settlers, has been nominated for Best Documentary Feature Film. The documentary has received numerous accolades since premiering at the Berlin International Film Festival last year, including top prizes from the Gotham Awards, International Documentary Association and Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards.
In the Shadow of the Cypress from Iranian filmmakers Hossein Molayemi and Shirin Sohani is nominated in the Best Animated Short Film category.
The Oscar nominations were originally planned to be announced on January 17, but were delayed due to the devastation caused by the Los Angeles wildfires, forcing the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences to extend its voting window.
The 97th Academy Awards are set to be held on March 2 at the Dolby Theatre Hollywood. Comedian Conan O'Brien will host.
