Four films by Arab filmmakers have been shortlisted for Oscars nominations.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, unveiled on Wednesday the titles in the running in 10 categories. These include documentary feature, documentary short film, international feature and live-action short film.
While only a handful of films by Arab filmmakers are on the list, the ones that are have all received international acclaim. The ceremony will be held on March 2 at the Dolby Theatre, Hollywood. Final nominations will be revealed on January 17.
Hollywoodgate
Award-winning Egyptian filmmaker Ibrahim Nash'at delves into the Taliban-ruled Afghanistan in Hollywoodgate. The documentary specifically looks at how, following the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, Taliban forces claimed the Hollywood Gate complex, which was said to be a former CIA base in Kabul.
The film offers unprecedented insight into the Taliban’s rule, with Nash’at embedding himself within the movement for the better part of the year. Hollywoodgate is produced by Nash’at alongside Navalny producer Shane Boris and Talal Derki, the Syrian-Kurdish filmmaker behind the Oscar-nominated documentary Of Fathers and Sons.
No Other Land
No Other Land has also been shortlisted in the documentary feature category. The film depicts the struggles faced by Palestinian journalist Basel Adra as he tries to preserve his West Bank village from Israeli settlers. No Other Land is an Israeli-Palestinian production, with Adra and Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham sharing director credits.
The film made a significant splash along the festival circuit, raking up awards at the Berlin International Film Festival, the International Documentary Association and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards, among others.
From Ground Zero
From Ground Zero is a collection of 22 short films made by Gazan filmmakers. The project, led by Palestinian filmmaker Rashid Masharawi, is shortlisted in the international feature film category. It marked its world premiere at the Amman International Film Festival. It was initially expected to be shown at the Cannes Film Festival but did not make the final line-up. Masharawi then led a protest screening in the French resort town with no official backing from Cannes.
Masharawi and the team of 22 filmmakers present a series of films that incorporate unexpected elements, including animation, puppetry and stop-motion. The works present a spectrum of emotions, ranging from resilience and tragedy to hope and finding joy in unlikely places.
An Orange from Jaffa
An Orange from Jaffa has been shortlisted in the live-action short film category. Directed by Gaza-born filmmaker Mohammed Almughanni, it follows a young Palestinian man as he tries to find a taxi to take him through an Israeli checkpoint. However, issues arise when the driver finds that the man has already failed to cross the checkpoint.
An Orange from Jaffa has already collected awards from several film festivals, including the Krakow Film Festival, the Leeds International Film Festival, the Art Film Festival and the El Gouna Film Festival.

Sinopharm vaccine explained
The Sinopharm vaccine was created using techniques that have been around for decades.
“This is an inactivated vaccine. Simply what it means is that the virus is taken, cultured and inactivated," said Dr Nawal Al Kaabi, chair of the UAE's National Covid-19 Clinical Management Committee.
"What is left is a skeleton of the virus so it looks like a virus, but it is not live."
This is then injected into the body.
"The body will recognise it and form antibodies but because it is inactive, we will need more than one dose. The body will not develop immunity with one dose," she said.
"You have to be exposed more than one time to what we call the antigen."
The vaccine should offer protection for at least months, but no one knows how long beyond that.
Dr Al Kaabi said early vaccine volunteers in China were given shots last spring and still have antibodies today.
“Since it is inactivated, it will not last forever," she said.

The alternatives
• Founded in 2014, Telr is a payment aggregator and gateway with an office in Silicon Oasis. It’s e-commerce entry plan costs Dh349 monthly (plus VAT). QR codes direct customers to an online payment page and merchants can generate payments through messaging apps.
• Business Bay’s Pallapay claims 40,000-plus active merchants who can invoice customers and receive payment by card. Fees range from 1.99 per cent plus Dh1 per transaction depending on payment method and location, such as online or via UAE mobile.
• Tap started in May 2013 in Kuwait, allowing Middle East businesses to bill, accept, receive and make payments online “easier, faster and smoother” via goSell and goCollect. It supports more than 10,000 merchants. Monthly fees range from US$65-100, plus card charges of 2.75-3.75 per cent and Dh1.2 per sale.
• 2checkout’s “all-in-one payment gateway and merchant account” accepts payments in 200-plus markets for 2.4-3.9 per cent, plus a Dh1.2-Dh1.8 currency conversion charge. The US provider processes online shop and mobile transactions and has 17,000-plus active digital commerce users.
• PayPal is probably the best-known online goods payment method - usually used for eBay purchases - but can be used to receive funds, providing everyone’s signed up. Costs from 2.9 per cent plus Dh1.2 per transaction.

How has net migration to UK changed?
The figure was broadly flat immediately before the Covid-19 pandemic, standing at 216,000 in the year to June 2018 and 224,000 in the year to June 2019.
It then dropped to an estimated 111,000 in the year to June 2020 when restrictions introduced during the pandemic limited travel and movement.
The total rose to 254,000 in the year to June 2021, followed by steep jumps to 634,000 in the year to June 2022 and 906,000 in the year to June 2023.
The latest available figure of 728,000 for the 12 months to June 2024 suggests levels are starting to decrease.
