South Korean actor Lee Sun-kyun has died. He was 48.
He was found dead in a car in a central Seoul park on Wednesday by authorities, the Korean emergency office said.
According to South Korean media outlets, including the Yonhap news agency, authorities were searching for Lee after his family filed a missing persons report. Lee had left home earlier that day after writing an apparent suicide note.
The actor was part of an ongoing investigation since October over accusations of illegal drug use. Lee had been questioned by the police three times, and as a result, decided to drop out of his latest project, No Way Out, a coming thriller drama.
Who was Lee Sun-kyun?
Lee, born in 1975, first gained attention in Korea after his role in the popular drama series Coffee Prince in 2007. He found mainstream popularity with the medical drama Behind The White Tower, followed by Pasta in 2010, the romantic comedy All About My Wife in 2012, and the black comedy A Hard Day in 2014.
Lee gained international fame for his role in the dark-comedy thriller Parasite in 2019, directed by Bong Joon-ho. The film won the best picture, best director, best original screenplay and best international feature film in the 2020 Academy Awards.
Lee played the role of Park Dong-ik, the head of a wealthy family, whose home is secretly taken over by the destitute Kim clan. Lee’s performance won him an Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture in the 2020 Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Lee also played the lead in Apple TV+'s first Korean-language original series, Dr Brain, which was released in 2021.
The six-episode sci-fi thriller follows a cold-hearted neurologist who is hunting for clues through brain experiments after the mysterious death of a family.
Lee’s performance landed him a nomination for Best Actor at the 50th International Emmy Awards in 2022.
Korean celebrities pay tribute to fallen star
Lee's passing prompted an outpouring of love and sorrow from his collaborators and contemporaries across the country.
"So shocked and heartbroken to hear the news," Fantastic Beasts star Claudia Kim shared on her Instagram. "Everyone deserves to be forgiven for their mistakes. Everyone deserves a second chance. What a loss of great talent it is for the Korean entertainment industry."
Actor and singer Lee Ji-hoon posted a black square on his Instagram in seeming reference to the tragic event.
K-pop star Cha Hyun-ok, also known as Yuri of the group Legendary Cool, shared: "I am so sad. This makes me even more afraid of people. He was human, just like us. Should his mistake cost him his life? This is heartbreaking and tragic. Sending prayers to his family."

Towering concerns
Sir John Jenkins review of the Muslim Brotherhood in the UK
The then British Prime Minister David Cameron asked Sir John Jenkins to undertake a review into the Muslim Brotherhood in 2014.
Sir John, a former diplomat who served in the UAE and was ambassador to Saudi Arabia, worked with Charles Farr , Director General of the Office for Security and Counter Terrorism at the Home Office.
The main body of the report was not made public but a summary of the main findings was released to Parliament.
The report says that from the beginning the Muslim Brotherhood adopted a “secretive ‘cell’ structure” and “this clandestine, centralised and hierarchical structure persists to this day”.
Sir John looked at the Muslim Brotherhood’s “complex” relationship with violence and terrorism.
The founder of the Muslim Brotherhood Hassan al Banna “accepted the political utility of violence”.
The views of key Muslim Brotherhood ideologue, Sayyid Qutb, have “consistently been understood” as permitting “the use of extreme violence in the pursuit of the perfect
Islamic society”. These views “have never been institutionally disowned” by the Muslim Brotherhood.
His report stated that the “Muslim Brotherhood at all levels have repeatedly defended Hamas attacks against Israel, including the use of suicide bombers and the killing of civilians”.
The section of the report on the Muslim Brotherhood presence in the UK was written by Charles Farr, who said in the 1990s it “established public facing and apparently national organisations in the UK to promote their views”.
“None were openly identified with the Muslim Brotherhood and membership of the Muslim Brotherhood remained (and still remains) a secret.
“But for some years the Muslim Brotherhood shaped the new Islamic Society of Britain (ISB), dominated the Muslim Association of Britain (MAB) and played an important role in establishing and then running the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB).
“In 2009 the government suspended dialogue with the MCB after an office holder signed a public document which appeared to condone violence against any country supporting an arms blockade against Gaza.
Sir John and Mr Farr concluded that the Muslim Brotherhood that any engagement “did not take account of Muslim Brotherhood support for a proscribed terrorist group and its views about terrorism which, in reality, were quite different from our own”.
“Aspects of Muslim Brotherhood ideology and tactics, in this country and overseas, are contrary to our values and have been contrary to our national interests and our national security.”

His life in brief: Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school. He was arrested several times by Israel for what were deemed to be inciteful poems. Most of his work focused on the love and yearning for his homeland, and he was regarded the Palestinian poet of resistance. Over the course of his life, he published more than 30 poetry collections and books of prose, with his work translated into more than 20 languages. Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife. Darwish died on August 9, 2008 after undergoing heart surgery in the United States. He was later buried in Ramallah where a shrine was erected in his honour.
