As well as being an international trading point and hosting high-profile literary launches, the Frankfurt Book Fair is also home to behind-the-scenes meetings for upcoming initiatives.
Such was the case at the weekend when representatives from Poland’s publishing sector visited the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority stand. The discussions focused on preparations for the country to be the guest of honour at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair. Poland will occupy a key stand and host a programme of authors and sessions to promote its rich literary tradition.
The Polish Book Institute, based in Kraków, is likely to be the cultural authority to organise activities in Abu Dhabi, having previously set up the stand at the New Delhi World Book Fair when Poland was the guest of honour there last year.
“It is always exciting when something like this happens, and it is a challenge,” says Agnieszka Bóbr, head of the Polish stand at the Frankfurt Book Fair. “You see, generally speaking, when a country becomes guest of honour, it is done for two reasons. The first being more trade-driven, in that we promote books and authors to a readership familiar with the work. The second, as was the case in New Delhi and in Abu Dhabi, it is a cultural initiative which also aims to create tourism and trade links with the country.”
Guest of honour status requires months of preparation. For the New Delhi World Book Fair, Bóbr and her team travelled to the city two months beforehand to get an overview of the literary scene. They held meetings with publishers, local authors and diplomats, after which a tailor-made programme was created for the fair’s audience. If the institute is tasked with the UAE project, Bóbr and her team will fly to the capital in February.
“It is a learning experience for us and we would love to meet local authors in the Emirates and find out more about the literature tradition there,” she says.
“It also makes me proud because Poland has great books and amazing writers, and if we can show that to a new part of the world then all the work will be worth it. If you come to our book stand with curiosity and an open mind you will be rewarded.”

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.

What is the FNC?
The Federal National Council is one of five federal authorities established by the UAE constitution. It held its first session on December 2, 1972, a year to the day after Federation.
It has 40 members, eight of whom are women. The members represent the UAE population through each of the emirates. Abu Dhabi and Dubai have eight members each, Sharjah and Ras al Khaimah six, and Ajman, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain have four.
They bring Emirati issues to the council for debate and put those concerns to ministers summoned for questioning.
The FNC’s main functions include passing, amending or rejecting federal draft laws, discussing international treaties and agreements, and offering recommendations on general subjects raised during sessions.
Federal draft laws must first pass through the FNC for recommendations when members can amend the laws to suit the needs of citizens. The draft laws are then forwarded to the Cabinet for consideration and approval.
Since 2006, half of the members have been elected by UAE citizens to serve four-year terms and the other half are appointed by the Ruler’s Courts of the seven emirates.
In the 2015 elections, 78 of the 252 candidates were women. Women also represented 48 per cent of all voters and 67 per cent of the voters were under the age of 40.

Financial considerations before buying a property
Buyers should try to pay as much in cash as possible for a property, limiting the mortgage value to as little as they can afford. This means they not only pay less in interest but their monthly costs are also reduced. Ideally, the monthly mortgage payment should not exceed 20 per cent of the purchaser’s total household income, says Carol Glynn, founder of Conscious Finance Coaching.
