'Time to catch breath': Venice Biennale exhibitions for architecture and art postponed

The Venice Biennale has postponed two of its major international exhibitions to 2021 and 2022.

The architecture biennale, officially named the 17th International Architecture Exhibition and originally scheduled for May 2020, will now open in May 2021.

The 59th International Art Exhibition will now take place in April 2022 instead of May 2021.

This is the second time the architecture biennale has been rescheduled. In March, organisers pushed the event from May 2020 to August 2020 due to the Covid-19 outbreak. The further postponement indicates that the effects of the pandemic continue to ripple across the art world, even as some of Italy's museums and galleries have begun to reopen.

In a statement, organisers acknowledged the “impossibility of proceeding – within the set time limits – in the creation of such a complex and worldwide exhibition, due to the persistence of a series of objective difficulties due to the ongoing international health emergency".

Curated by Lebanese architect Hashim Sarkis, the architecture biennale is themed How Will We Live Together?, which looks at structural problems within society and seeks ways to address it politically, socially and spatially.

"I hope the new opening date will allow [participants] to catch their breath to complete the job with the time and vigour it deserves," said Sarkis in a statement.

“We did not plan it this way. Neither the question I asked, ‘How will we live together?’ nor the wealth of ways in response to it, were meant to address the crisis they are living, but here we are …  We are in some ways fortunate because we are well equipped to absorb the immediate and longer-term implications of the crisis into the [Architecture Biennale] 2021.”

Due to these schedule changes, the art biennale had to be pushed by a year as well and will be open for seven months starting April 23, 2022.

The event will now coincide with the next outing of Documenta, also a major contemporary art exhibition in Europe held in Kassel Germany, that is scheduled for June 2022.

HOW DO SIM CARD SCAMS WORK?

Sim swap frauds are a form of identity theft.

They involve criminals conning mobile phone operators into issuing them with replacement Sim cards, often by claiming their phone has been lost or stolen

They use the victim's personal details - obtained through criminal methods - to convince such companies of their identity.

The criminal can then access any online service that requires security codes to be sent to a user's mobile phone, such as banking services.

New UK refugee system

  • A new “core protection” for refugees moving from permanent to a more basic, temporary protection
  • Shortened leave to remain - refugees will receive 30 months instead of five years
  • A longer path to settlement with no indefinite settled status until a refugee has spent 20 years in Britain
  • To encourage refugees to integrate the government will encourage them to out of the core protection route wherever possible.
  • Under core protection there will be no automatic right to family reunion
  • Refugees will have a reduced right to public funds

Tightening the screw on rogue recruiters

The UAE overhauled the procedure to recruit housemaids and domestic workers with a law in 2017 to protect low-income labour from being exploited.

Only recruitment companies authorised by the government are permitted as part of Tadbeer, a network of labour ministry-regulated centres.

A contract must be drawn up for domestic workers, the wages and job offer clearly stating the nature of work.

The contract stating the wages, work entailed and accommodation must be sent to the employee in their home country before they depart for the UAE.

The contract will be signed by the employer and employee when the domestic worker arrives in the UAE.

Only recruitment agencies registered with the ministry can undertake recruitment and employment applications for domestic workers.

Penalties for illegal recruitment in the UAE include fines of up to Dh100,000 and imprisonment

But agents not authorised by the government sidestep the law by illegally getting women into the country on visit visas.
