The first phase of Sharjah Art Foundation’s reopening will begin on Friday, June 26.

Select venues, specifically Rain Room Sharjah and the gallery spaces for the foundation’s current exhibition, Art in the Age of Anxiety, will be open to the public daily from 4pm to 9pm on Fridays and from 9am to 9pm on Saturdays to Thursdays.

The foundation has also created an online booking system to enable visitors to schedule a time slot ahead of their arrival in Sharjah.

Visits to the show Art in the Age of Anxiety, located in the foundation’s Al Mureijah Art Spaces and Al Mureijah Square, are limited to 45 minutes per person. Rain Room Sharjah will accommodate five guests per viewing, with a 15-minute time limit.

Curated by Omar Kholeif, Art in the Age of Anxiety explores the impact of digital technology on society. The major exhibition, which features more than 30 international contemporary artists and art collectives and was scheduled to end in June, has been extended until Saturday, September 26.

All visitors are required to wear face masks. The foundation is also undertaking other safety measures, including enhanced disinfection of spaces and temperature checks of staff and visitors.

Sharjah Art Foundation's reopening coincides with the emirate's easing of restrictions on cinemas, gyms, restaurants, museums and private beaches on Wednesday, June 24. The venues will be able to operate at 50 per cent capacity.

The closures caused by the coronavirus have affected the foundation’s programming schedule for the year. Its annual March Meeting, which was to take place from March 21 to 23, has been moved to 2021. The event will bear the same theme as intended for 2020 – Unravelling the Present, which will investigate the evolution of the famed Sharjah Biennial.

That event, now in its 15th iteration, has been moved to 2022. Its programme, Thinking Historically in the Present, was conceived by the late curator Okwui Enwezor with the foundation’s president Sheikha Hoor Al Qasimi.

Muslim Council of Elders condemns terrorism on religious sites

The Muslim Council of Elders has strongly condemned the criminal attacks on religious sites in Britain.

It firmly rejected “acts of terrorism, which constitute a flagrant violation of the sanctity of houses of worship”.

“Attacking places of worship is a form of terrorism and extremism that threatens peace and stability within societies,” it said.

The council also warned against the rise of hate speech, racism, extremism and Islamophobia. It urged the international community to join efforts to promote tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
