The National Creative Relief Programme continues to aid the UAE creative sector in its time of need.
Launched by the Ministry of Culture and Youth, the programme is in its second phase, with grants having been provided to freelancers and small businesses affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
As part of its second phase, the initiative has supported 53 individuals and organisations with grants ranging from Dh15,000 to Dh75,000. Since its launch in May, the programme has provided grants totalling Dh4.6 million to the UAE's creative sectors. The cash injection went towards supporting creatives in various fields, including performance, literature, multimedia and visual arts, as well as design.
The grants covered the entirety of average monthly financial obligations for individuals, and a month and a half for companies.
Applications for the second phase of grants, which UAE residents and Emiratis were eligible to apply for, closed on July 14.
Each submission had been evaluated by a committee that examined various aspects, including the size of losses, the financial setback and the production of creative content in the UAE in 2019.
“The National Creative Relief Programme carries the values of solidarity and compassion that are inherent in the UAE society,” said Noura Al Kaabi, Minister of Culture and Youth.
“These values not only help overcome an exceptional circumstance all over the world, but also help individuals and companies to continue their creative practice and ensure that the cultural sector has a positive impact on the development process in the country.”
Al Kaabi also underscored the important role that creativity plays in UAE society.
"Creativity is a reflection of a strong society,” she said. “The more creative the society is, the more powerful it is to face challenges and overcome them to create a better future.”

Tips for used car buyers
- Choose cars with GCC specifications
- Get a service history for cars less than five years old
- Don’t go cheap on the inspection
- Check for oil leaks
- Do a Google search on the standard problems for your car model
- Do your due diligence. Get a transfer of ownership done at an official RTA centre
- Check the vehicle’s condition. You don’t want to buy a car that’s a good deal but ends up costing you Dh10,000 in repairs every month
- Validate warranty and service contracts with the relevant agency and and make sure they are valid when ownership is transferred
- If you are planning to sell the car soon, buy one with a good resale value. The two most popular cars in the UAE are black or white in colour and other colours are harder to sell

A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.
Route 1: bank transfer
The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.
Total cost: Dh567.25 - around 2.9 per cent of the total amount
Total received: €4,670.30
Route 2: online platform
The UAE bank’s charge for sending Dh20,000 to a UK dirham-denominated account was Dh2.10. The exchange rate margin cost was Dh60, plus a Dh12 fee.
Total cost: Dh74.10, around 0.4 per cent of the transaction
Total received: €4,756
The UAE bank transfer was far quicker – around two to three working days, while the online platform took around four to five days, but was considerably cheaper. In the online platform transfer, the funds were also exposed to currency risk during the period it took for them to arrive.
