For a lesson in art history and the chance to see work from som of the biggest names in modern art – Picasso, Braque, Miro, Matisse, Chagall and Dali – then head down to Majlis Gallery.
The gallery, Dubai’s oldest, situated in Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, has an exhibition of genuine, certified and signed original drawings, lithographs, etchings, aquatints and ceramics from these artists known collectively as The School of Paris.
From about 1900-1940, artists gravitated towards Paris, the thriving, cultural hub of Europe and thanks to enormous influx of non-French artists, a loosely defined affiliation developed referred to as the School of Paris.
It was in this group that the bases of contemporary art were founded – Cubism, Surrealism, Expressionism and Fauvism were some of the movements that emerged.
As such, this exhibition – which only runs until the end of the week – is really a must see. Curated by British art dealers Niall and Christina Fairhead, the show, of 51 pieces, will move to London for the first week of May.
