Omar Kholeif, an Egyptian-British curator, who currently works at London’s Whitechapel gallery and is also the guest curator for next year’s Abraaj Group Art Prize, which culminates at Art Dubai, has also been announced as the curator for the Focus section at next year’s Armory Show in New York.
Kholeif is heading the section, which not only covers the Middle East and North Africa but also the Mediterranean. Lawrence Abu Hamdan, a London and Beirut-based Lebanese artist has also been announced as the commissioned artist.
The Armory Show, a leading international contemporary and modern art fair is one of the most important global art events and takes place every March on two piers in central Manhattan.
For next year, Abu Hamdan has been tasked with helping to create the visual identity of the upcoming fair as well as produce both a limited edition artwork with proceeds benefitting New York’s Museum of Modern Art.
Abu Hamdan, whose research is mainly focused on the relationship between listening and speaking as well as the political undercurrent of human rights and international law, is known for his audio works.
Earlier this year, he made a commissioned piece for Saout Radio and Kunst Radio called “Aural Contracts Audio Archive mix” where the reflected on politics, borders, human rights, testimony, truth and international law.
At the core of his work for The Armory Show are the fundamental concepts of political speech – the oath, right to silence, freedom of press – often demonstrating that the battle for free speech is largely about controlling the conditions in which we are heard.
Noah Horowitz, the Armory Show’s director, who I caught up with at last week’s Abu Dhabi Art explains a little more.
“In New York there area a few galleries and institutions that have been active with Middle Eastern artists for a few years but truly it is not at the level of other parts of the world – say London or Europe - and what the Armory is trying to do is serve as a catalyst or platform to give greater visibility and recognition to what’s happening here.”

The smuggler
Eldarir had arrived at JFK in January 2020 with three suitcases, containing goods he valued at $300, when he was directed to a search area.
Officers found 41 gold artefacts among the bags, including amulets from a funerary set which prepared the deceased for the afterlife.
Also found was a cartouche of a Ptolemaic king on a relief that was originally part of a royal building or temple.
The largest single group of items found in Eldarir’s cases were 400 shabtis, or figurines.
Khouli conviction
Khouli smuggled items into the US by making false declarations to customs about the country of origin and value of the items.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he provided “false provenances which stated that [two] Egyptian antiquities were part of a collection assembled by Khouli's father in Israel in the 1960s” when in fact “Khouli acquired the Egyptian antiquities from other dealers”.
He was sentenced to one year of probation, six months of home confinement and 200 hours of community service in 2012 after admitting buying and smuggling Egyptian antiquities, including coffins, funerary boats and limestone figures.

A number of other items said to come from the collection of Ezeldeen Taha Eldarir are currently or recently for sale.
Their provenance is described in near identical terms as the British Museum shabti: bought from Salahaddin Sirmali, "authenticated and appraised" by Hossen Rashed, then imported to the US in 1948.

Real estate tokenisation project
Dubai launched the pilot phase of its real estate tokenisation project last month.
The initiative focuses on converting real estate assets into digital tokens recorded on blockchain technology and helps in streamlining the process of buying, selling and investing, the Dubai Land Department said.
Dubai’s real estate tokenisation market is projected to reach Dh60 billion ($16.33 billion) by 2033, representing 7 per cent of the emirate’s total property transactions, according to the DLD.

La Mer lowdown
La Mer beach is open from 10am until midnight, daily, and is located in Jumeirah 1, well after Kite Beach. Some restaurants, like Cupagahwa, are open from 8am for breakfast; most others start at noon. At the time of writing, we noticed that signs for Vicolo, an Italian eatery, and Kaftan, a Turkish restaurant, indicated that these two restaurants will be open soon, most likely this month. Parking is available, as well as a Dh100 all-day valet option or a Dh50 valet service if you’re just stopping by for a few hours.
Skewed figures
In the village of Mevagissey in southwest England the housing stock has doubled in the last century while the number of residents is half the historic high. The village's Neighbourhood Development Plan states that 26% of homes are holiday retreats. Prices are high, averaging around £300,000, £50,000 more than the Cornish average of £250,000. How the UAE gratuity payment is calculated now
Employees leaving an organisation are entitled to an end-of-service gratuity after completing at least one year of service.
The tenure is calculated on the number of days worked and does not include lengthy leave periods, such as a sabbatical. If you have worked for a company between one and five years, you are paid 21 days of pay based on your final basic salary. After five years, however, you are entitled to 30 days of pay. The total lump sum you receive is based on the duration of your employment.
1. For those who have worked between one and five years, on a basic salary of Dh10,000 (calculation based on 30 days):
a. Dh10,000 ÷ 30 = Dh333.33. Your daily wage is Dh333.33
b. Dh333.33 x 21 = Dh7,000. So 21 days salary equates to Dh7,000 in gratuity entitlement for each year of service. Multiply this figure for every year of service up to five years.
2. For those who have worked more than five years
c. 333.33 x 30 = Dh10,000. So 30 days’ salary is Dh10,000 in gratuity entitlement for each year of service.
Note: The maximum figure cannot exceed two years total salary figure.
