Calling all emerging Emirati artists and designers. Want to show off your creative talent? TCA Abu Dhabi has an open call for applications for the annual Wings Project as part of the 2017 Abu Dhabi Art programme.
The Wings Project is an competition aimed at emerging Emirati talent over the age of 18. The contest invites applicants to put to use their creativity and recreate the “Wing” shape that forms part of the Abu Dhabi Art logo. Three winning designs will be selected and each will receive a prize of Dh5,000 and a VIP invitation to Abu Dhabi Art.
Commenting on the annual competition, director of Abu Dhabi Art Dyala Nusseibeh said: “The Wings Project allows us to support creativity and design innovation through a very distinct initiative. We look forward to seeing the new entries this year.”
Applicants can submit entries via email at wings@abudhabiart.ae while the application forms can be downloaded at www.abudhabiart.ae. The deadline to submit entries is July 16 and all entries should feature the Wing.

What the law says
Micro-retirement is not a recognised concept or employment status under Federal Decree Law No. 33 of 2021 on the Regulation of Labour Relations (as amended) (UAE Labour Law). As such, it reflects a voluntary work-life balance practice, rather than a recognised legal employment category, according to Dilini Loku, senior associate for law firm Gateley Middle East.
“Some companies may offer formal sabbatical policies or career break programmes; however, beyond such arrangements, there is no automatic right or statutory entitlement to extended breaks,” she explains.
“Any leave taken beyond statutory entitlements, such as annual leave, is typically regarded as unpaid leave in accordance with Article 33 of the UAE Labour Law. While employees may legally take unpaid leave, such requests are subject to the employer’s discretion and require approval.”
If an employee resigns to pursue micro-retirement, the employment contract is terminated, and the employer is under no legal obligation to rehire the employee in the future unless specific contractual agreements are in place (such as return-to-work arrangements), which are generally uncommon, Ms Loku adds.

Retail gloom
Online grocer Ocado revealed retail sales fell 5.7 per cen in its first quarter as customers switched back to pre-pandemic shopping patterns.
