The world's richest man arrived at the Met Gala last night with his mother on his arm. Wearing white-tie tails, he escorted Maye Musk to the red carpet event, that had a Gilded Glamour theme, in a nod to New York’s golden age at the end of the 19th century.
Maye, a Canadian-South African model, wore a deep-crimson, velvet gown by Dior, with long strands of Chopard pearls for the event.
This is Elon's first major public outing since his bid to buy Twitter began. He spoke about the business move on the Met Gala red carpet.
"My goal, assuming everything gets done, is to make Twitter as inclusive as possible and to have as broad a swathe of people on Twitter as possible," he said.
Pulling silly faces for the waiting photographers, he explained how he wanted Twitter users to enjoy his as-yet-undisclosed alterations, hoping people will find the experience “entertaining and funny and they have as much fun as possible."
When he announced the planned acquisition on April 25, Musk tweeted that, "Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated."
This is not the first time mother and son have attended the Met Gala together. In 2016, the pair arrived to the Manus x Machina-themed evening, while in 2018, Musk announced his relationship with the singer Grimes by inviting her to the gala. For that evening, Musk wore a white tuxedo, with the words 'novus ordo seclorum,' that translates as 'new world order' scrawled across the back.
