Greek developer Lamda Development has unveiled the design for a new skyscraper to be built near Athens named Marina Tower, which will become the tallest building in Greece. Once built in Ellinikon, on the outskirts of Athens, it will be one of the area's most prominent architectural landmarks.
Designed by UK studio Foster + Partners, Marina Tower will rise to 200 metres above sea level, featuring 200 apartments on 45 floors. Upon its completion, which will take five years, it will be one of the six tall buildings to be developed at Ellinikon as part of larger master plan for the area.
“Ellinikon masterplan gives new direction to urban development in Athens, bringing together new ways of living, working and playing, centred on a metropolitan park – a generous amenity for local communities and the city of Athens. Our proposals for Marina Residential Tower build on these sustainable principles to generate a new paradigm for high-rise living and a green beacon in the landscape," said Antoinette Nassopoulos-Erickson, Senior Partner at Foster + Partners.
As described by its developer, the master plan "establishes a new paradigm for integrated and sustainable living, transforming the site of a former airport into a vibrant district. It will feature several diverse neighbourhoods that bring together residential, shopping, working, leisure, entertainment and cultural activities around the largest coastal park in Europe."
Marina Tower sits at the heart of the master plan and looks to be an example of sustainable contemporary living. The tower has been designed in a way to celebrate its location, with its goal being immersed in its surrounding natural environment. All apartments will be dual aspect and enjoy unobstructed panoramic views of the coastline and incorporate naturally ventilated interiors.

WHAT IS GRAPHENE?
It was discovered in 2004, when Russian-born Manchester scientists Andrei Geim and Kostya Novoselov were experimenting with sticky tape and graphite, the material used as lead in pencils.
Placing the tape on the graphite and peeling it, they managed to rip off thin flakes of carbon. In the beginning they got flakes consisting of many layers of graphene. But when they repeated the process many times, the flakes got thinner.
By separating the graphite fragments repeatedly, they managed to create flakes that were just one atom thick. Their experiment led to graphene being isolated for the very first time.
In 2010, Geim and Novoselov were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics.
